The role supports new product development, application enhancements, modernization, integrations, and specialized engineering projects.\n\nThe ideal candidate will have strong hands-on PHP expertise with the ability to work across frontend, backend, databases, cloud, DevOps, and emerging technologies. Engineers should be comfortable working with both modern PHP applications and legacy enterprise systems, including troubleshooting, maintaining, and modernizing older applications.\n\nThe role requires strong problem-solving skills, adaptability to unfamiliar codebases, effective use of AI-assisted development tools, and ownership of high-quality engineering outcomes.\n\nRoles And Responsibilities\n\nDesign, develop, test, maintain, and modernize PHP applications.\nDevelop applications using modern PHP frameworks such as Laravel and Symfony.\nBuild and consume REST APIs and enterprise integrations.\nDevelop full-stack applications using PHP with React, Angular, Vue.js, or similar technologies.\nWork with both modern and legacy PHP applications and identify modernization opportunities.\nUpgrade PHP versions, frameworks, libraries, and dependencies.\nRefactor legacy PHP applications toward modern and maintainable architectures.\nWork with relational and NoSQL databases and optimize database performance.\nDevelop integrations with enterprise applications and third-party services.\nWork with AWS or Azure cloud platforms.\nImplement CI/CD pipelines and automated testing.\nTroubleshoot application and production issues.\nImprove application performance, security, reliability, and maintainability.\nParticipate in technical design, architecture discussions, and code reviews.\nIntegrate AI/ML services, LLM APIs, and intelligent automation where applicable.\nCollaborate with engineers, product teams, architects, and Business Unit stakeholders.\nAdapt to different projects and technology environments based on business priorities.\n\nQualifications & Required Skills\n\nPHP Development\n\nStrong hands-on PHP development experience.\nPHP 8.x preferred, with experience in PHP 7.x.\nStrong understanding of object-oriented PHP.\nExperience with namespaces, Composer, dependency management, and modern PHP practices.\nExperience developing and consuming REST APIs.\n\nLegacy PHP\n\nExperience working with PHP 5.x or older PHP applications.\nExperience with legacy PHP frameworks and custom MVC architectures.\nExperience working with older third-party libraries.\nUnderstanding of procedural or tightly coupled PHP applications.\nAbility to troubleshoot, maintain, and modernize legacy PHP applications.\n\nPHP Frameworks\n\nHands-on experience with at least one modern PHP framework:\nLaravel\nSymfony\nEquivalent modern PHP framework\n\nFrontend Development\n\nHands-on experience with at least one:\nReact\nAngular\nVue.js\nJavaScript / TypeScript\n\nDatabase\n\nStrong SQL fundamentals.\nStrong experience with MySQL preferred.\nExperience with PostgreSQL or other relational databases.\nUnderstanding of database performance and optimization.\n\nEngineering Practices\n\nGit and source-control workflows.\nAutomated testing.\nCI/CD.\nDebugging and troubleshooting.\nAPI design and integration.\nSecure coding practices.\n\nMandatory Skills\n\nPHP 7/8\nLaravel / Symfony\nReact / Angular / Vue.js\nSQL / MySQL\nREST APIs\nObject-Oriented PHP\nComposer & Dependency Management\nGit\nAutomated Testing\nCI/CD\nLegacy Application Troubleshooting / Modernization\n\nGood To Have Skills\n\nAWS or Azure.\nDocker / Containerization.\nKubernetes.\nInfrastructure as Code.\nMicroservices architecture.\nMessage queues.\nServerless technologies.\nJava or .NET.\nPython.\nAI/ML services.\nGenerative AI / LLM APIs.\nAI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Claude, Cursor, or similar.\nApplication modernization.\nObservability and monitoring.\n\nSenior / Lead Engineer – Additional Expectations\n\nDrive technical design and architecture decisions.\nLead application modernization initiatives.\nAssess legacy PHP architectures and define pragmatic migration strategies.\nEnsure application security, scalability, reliability, and maintainability.\nMentor engineers and lead technical initiatives.\nEngage with stakeholders to resolve complex technical and business problems.\nProvide technical direction across projects and technology environments.\n\nAbout Sonata Software\n\nSonata Software is an AI-first modernization engineering company that helps enterprises transform legacy systems into intelligent, scalable business platforms.
