It works directly inside Microsoft Word to help legal teams draft, review, and negotiate contracts up to 10x faster and with greater precision. Today, more than 4,000 law firms, in-house teams, and solo practitioners rely on Spellbook to simplify their workflows and eliminate the drudgery of everyday contract work. \nWe are backed by leading investors including Khosla Ventures, Thomson Reuters Ventures, Inovia Capital, The LegalTech Fund, Bling Capital, and Moxxie Ventures. The company recently raised $50 million in Series B funding, led by Keith Rabois at Khosla Ventures, bringing its total funding to more than $80 million.\n*This is an existing vacancy\nABOUT THE ROLE\nWe’re looking for a Director of Finance to help shape Spellbook’s next stage of growth. You will work closely with our VP of Finance, executive team, and leaders across the company to translate strategy into financial plans, guide our most important investment decisions, and create a clear view of business performance.\nThis role sits at the intersection of finance, strategy, and company execution. As the company scales, you will build the capabilities, processes, and operating cadence to develop insight into the drivers of our business and bring analytical rigor to decisions across growth, product investment, organizational capacity, and capital allocation.\nWe’re looking for a business-oriented finance leader who can move comfortably between the details and the bigger picture. You should be equally capable of building a rigorous model, challenging assumptions, building board-level presentations, and helping an executive decide what action to take.\nRESPONSIBILITIES\nBuild investment cases for major strategic bets, new segments, market entry, GTM and product investments, and lead post-investment reviews to assess expected versus realized returns.\n\nOwn the framework for allocating spend and headcount across GTM, R&D, and G&A, including the mechanisms and decision criteria for reallocating resources as priorities change.\n\nOwn the annual planning, quarterly forecasting, and rolling outlook processes, establishing clear inputs, owners, timelines, and accountability for forecast accuracy.\n\nMake unit economics legible to non-finance leaders, including gross margin and model/inference costs, cost-to-serve, CAC payback, customer profitability, and NRR/GRR, so teams can understand the economics of their decisions and run their own math between reviews.\n\nPartner with GTM and Product on pricing and packaging as the model evolves, including usage-based components. Model alternatives, stress-test downside scenarios, and establish clear economic guardrails for commercial decisions.\n\nWork with the finance team to shape our systems roadmap: CRM, billing, ERP, expense, and reporting. Set priorities, define requirements, and drive implementation with RevOps, Data, and external partners, with clear ownership for data integrity and reporting accuracy.\n\nPartner with the VP Finance and executive team on board and investor materials, translating company performance, forecast changes, and strategic decisions into a clear financial narrative.\n\nBuild the capabilities, processes, and operating cadence required for a high-performing strategic finance function, including developing the team and establishing clear ownership across planning, forecasting, analytics, and business partnering.\n\nQUALIFICATIONS\nWhat you've done:\nRun planning, forecasting, and business partnering at a high-growth B2B software company, ideally through a phase where the model or motion changed underneath you.\n\nWorked inside a usage-based, consumption, or hybrid pricing model, or built the transition to one. You know why consumption forecasting is different, and you have been wrong at it before and learned something.\n\nOwned or led a meaningful finance systems or process change, and can talk specifically about what you scoped, what you deferred, and what broke.\n\nTaken a messy set of operational data and turned it into a narrative an exec team acted on.\n\nPresented to senior leadership or a board and defended the numbers under pressure.\n\nWhat we're looking for:\n8+ years across FP&A, strategic finance, or business finance in software, including time at a growth-stage company where the process did not exist yet.\n\nDeep fluency in SaaS and consumption metrics: ARR and its limits, NRR, gross margin under variable COGS, magic number, payback, burn efficiency.\n\nExcellent modeler. You build models other people can follow, audit, and use.\n\nSystems literate. You know how CRM, billing, ERP, and reporting fit together; you can tell when the data is wrong, and you can direct a systems project without needing to write the code yourself.\n\nA real point of view and the spine to hold it. You can tell a GTM leader their deal is suboptimal, show the work, and still get invited to the next pipeline review.\n\nExceptional at compressing complexity into a clear recommendation, in writing, quickly.\n\nHigh ownership and low ego about scope. At our stage you will build the model and also chase down the mapping that is wrong.\n\nNICE TO HAVES\nLegal tech or legal industry exposure\n\nEnterprise procurement and security-heavy sales cycles\n\nAudit readiness or pre-IPO experience\n\nFamiliarity with AI infrastructure cost management\n\nWHY JOIN SPELLBOOK?\nEmbrace autonomy and accountability in a flexible work environment; we focus on outcomes and empower you to determine how to get the job done\n\nAccess our company-paid group benefits for you and your family, with $1,000 towards mental health support\n\nDisconnect during our holiday closure and take advantage of our generous time off policies throughout the year\n\nEnjoy monthly paid meals, an annual wellness allowance to support your well-being and parental leave top-ups as your family grows\n\nSecure your stake in our success; you’ll receive competitive stock option grants as a pivotal early employee\n\nInclusive Hiring at Spellbook\nWe are committed to creating an inclusive and supportive candidate experience. Should you require any accommodation whatsoever during the interview process, please inform us without any hesitation. This includes activities such as drafting job descriptions, generating interview questions, note-taking and recordings, and supporting sourcing and scheduling workflows. All candidate evaluations, interviews, and hiring decisions are made by members of the Spellbook team. While AI tools may assist with screening and assessment, they do not replace human judgment in selection decisions. Our use of AI is intended to streamline routine tasks, improve consistency, and enhance the overall candidate experience. We are committed to upholding principles of fairness, transparency, and accountability in all hiring activities. Spellbook regularly reviews its recruitment practices to mitigate bias and to ensure alignment with applicable laws and evolving best practices.\nOur Compensation Philosophy\nSpellbook uses industry benchmark data to establish compensation bands for all roles. The salary range listed for a position reflects the expected total wage range for the role-including base salary and on-target commissions, where applicable-and may span multiple career levels. Final compensation is determined during the interview process based on factors such as experience, skills, scope, and role level. In addition to base salary and applicable commissions, total rewards may include equity, health and wellness benefits, and other company programs. Full details will be shared during the interview process.","description_format":"text","description_chars":8369,"description_truncated":false,"requirements":{"experience_years_min":8,"management_years_min":null,"team_size_min":null,"manages_managers":false,"education":null,"security_clearance":false,"languages":[]},"benefits":["Equity","Flexible schedule","Parental leave"],"hiring_locations":[{"name":"United States","iso":"US","kind":"country"},{"name":"Canada","iso":"CA","kind":"country"}],"hiring_excludes":[],"relocation_offered":false,"industries":["Document AI","Legal AI"],"lifecycle":[{"event":"open","at":"2026-10-01T23:34:12Z"}],"visa":[],"liveness":{"score":90,"band":"hot","label":"Hiring now","p_open":1,"p_active":0.896,"p_room":1,"age_days":17,"expected_fill_days":72,"reasons":["conf:0","velocity","win:early"],"computed_at":"2026-10-19T05:45:15Z"},"pay":{"stated_usd_annual":140693,"is_top_pay":false},"html_url":"https://alion.io/job/spellbook-director-finance","json_url":"https://alion.io/job/spellbook-director-finance.json","meta":{"generated_at":"2026-10-19T09:31:36Z","cache_seconds":300,"methodology":"https://alion.io/methodology","terms":"https://alion.io/terms","contact":"https://alion.io/contact","api":"https://alion.io/developers","about":"Alion is a live layer of people, companies and AI agents: who they are, whether they are real and active right now, what they do and how to work with them, readable by people and by agents and paid per call.","catalog":"https://alion.io/catalog.json","usage":{"tier":"crawler_verified","counted_by":"address","units_charged":1,"used_today":6676,"day_limit":null,"remaining_today":null,"minute_limit":300,"resets_at":"2026-10-20T00:00:00Z"}},"offers":[{"id":"company.slices","title":"One company in depth, by slice","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002,"plus_per_slice":{"credits":0.05,"usd":0.005}},"unit":"per company, plus each slice with data","note":"the employer in depth","call":{"mcp_tool":"get_company","arguments":{"id":4703},"rest":"https://alion.io/mcp/rest/get_company?id=4703"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.slices&for=job%2Fspellbook-director-finance"},{"id":"market.stats","title":"A market slice: pay, demand and time to fill","status":"live","price":{"credits":1,"usd":0.1},"unit":"per slice","note":"pay, demand and time to fill for this role and place","call":{"mcp_tool":"market_stats"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=market.stats&for=job%2Fspellbook-director-finance"},{"id":"job.search","title":"Open jobs by role, technology, place, pay and visa","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002},"unit":"per posting in a list","note":"similar open postings","call":{"mcp_tool":"search_jobs"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=job.search&for=job%2Fspellbook-director-finance"},{"id":"company.verify","title":"Is this company real and active right now","status":"pilot","price":null,"unit":"per company","request":{"url":"https://alion.io/catalog/request","method":"POST","body":"{\"offer\": \"company.verify\", \"for\": \"job/spellbook-director-finance\", \"note\": \"what you need it for\"}"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.verify&for=job%2Fspellbook-director-finance"}]}
