As a leading sports data provider, we've pioneered world-first innovations such as our range of Smart Balls, and we continue to expand into new sports and new markets. Our products combine cutting-edge embedded systems, wireless technology, and cloud-based platforms.\nWe are looking for a skilled Hardware Test and Assembly Technicianto work alongside our hardware engineers on the bench, building, reworking and testing the electronics that go inside our ball and player tags.\nRole Overview\nThis is development work, not a production line. Every board is different, most of them are the first of their kind, and the work needs judgement as well as a steady hand. You will be the person who builds it, reworks it, tests it, and writes down what actually happened.\nYou will also own the lab: component stock, kitting, consumables and ESD control.\nKey Responsibilities\nAssembly, Rework and BuildHand assembly and rework of development boards, down to 0201 passives and fine-pitch leadless packages, under a stereo microscope.\nHot-air and preheat rework: part replacement, shielding cans, pad and track repair, solder-bridge and cold-joint correction.\nRadio-frequency detail work: coaxial pigtails and connectors, antenna feeds, fine coil and enamelled-wire terminations.\nCable, harness and battery-lead assembly to a drawing: crimping, strain relief, heat-shrink and labelling.\nMechanical assembly of development units with our Mechanical Technical Lead: seals, retention and potting preparation.\n\nTest Execution and RecordsExecuting written test and bring-up procedures on serialised units, and recording what you measured rather than what was expected.\nFirst-line fault isolation: narrowing a problem down to a subsystem and handing it over with the evidence attached.\nPhotographic records of each unit before and after rework, filed against the serial.\nSupporting bring-up on new boards alongside the design engineers, including same-day rework turnaround.\n\nFixtures, Lab and StockBuilding, wiring and maintaining test fixtures and jigs from an engineer's design.\nOwning component stock, consumables and kitting, and flagging a shortage before it stops a build.\nOwning the ESD control routine across the lab, and instrument calibration due dates.\nSafe handling, charging and storage of lithium-polymer cells.\n\nYou will not be asked to design circuits or lay out boards, and you will not be asked to diagnose root cause or sign a test off as passed. You will be asked to build things properly, to tell us the truth about what they do, and to write it down.\nQualifications and Experience\nA recognised electronics qualification (N4 to N6 or S4 electrical or electronic engineering, NCV level 4 electronics, or a completed electronics or instrumentation trade qualification), orthree or more years of hands-on electronics assembly and rework experience.\nReal fine-pitch surface-mount rework skill. You will be asked to demonstrate it at our bench.\nConfident with a stereo microscope, temperature-controlled iron, hot-air station and preheater.\nConfident with a multimeter, bench supply and oscilloscope, including knowing when a measurement is not trustworthy.\nAble to read a schematic, an assembly drawing and a bill of materials.\nClear, complete written records.\nESD discipline that does not need reminding.\nAvailable full-time for six months, and able to commute daily to Claremont, Cape Town.\nNice-to-Have\nIPC certification: J-STD-001, IPC-A-610, or IPC 7711 and 7721 rework and repair.\nExperience in low-volume, high-mix product development rather than high-volume production. This is the single best predictor of fit.\nRF or wireless product experience, including coaxial assembly and shielding.\nTest fixture, jig or wiring loom build experience.\nLithium-polymer cell handling.\nStock control, kitting or stores experience.\nJira or a similar ticketing tool, and spreadsheet competence for results capture.\nAny scripting, even basic, for bench logging.\nReporting to\nHead of Hardware\nDay-to-day direction from our Principal Hardware Engineer\nWorking closely with our Hardware Engineer, our Mechanical Technical Lead and the Embedded Firmware team\nWhy Join Sportable?\nA route to a permanent positionif it suits both sides. Six months, then a permanent role in a team building world-first products.\nReal ownership.The fixtures, the stock and the lab are yours.\nWork at the cutting edge of sports technology, on products that are changing how fans, players, and coaches experience the game.\nEvery board is different and most are the first of their kind. If you are bored by repetition, this is the opposite of a production line.\nWork you can point at when you watch a professional match, alongside a multi-disciplinary teamspanning electronics, RF, embedded software, cloud, and data science.\nDiversity Statement:\nSportable is a committed equal opportunities employer, and we welcome applications from disabled candidates, and those from minority ethnic backgrounds.","description_format":"text","description_chars":5070,"description_truncated":false,"requirements":{"experience_years_min":null,"management_years_min":null,"team_size_min":null,"manages_managers":false,"education":null,"security_clearance":false,"languages":[]},"benefits":[],"hiring_locations":[],"hiring_excludes":[],"relocation_offered":false,"industries":["Sports"],"lifecycle":[{"event":"open","at":"2026-09-28T15:46:05Z"}],"visa":[],"liveness":{"score":27,"band":"fade","label":"Fading","p_open":1,"p_active":0.364,"p_room":0.75,"age_days":57,"expected_fill_days":61,"reasons":["conf:0","win:late"],"computed_at":"2026-10-17T05:46:00Z"},"pay":null,"html_url":"https://alion.io/job/sportable-hardware-test-and-assembly-technician","json_url":"https://alion.io/job/sportable-hardware-test-and-assembly-technician.json","meta":{"generated_at":"2026-10-19T02:35:37Z","cache_seconds":300,"methodology":"https://alion.io/methodology","terms":"https://alion.io/terms","contact":"https://alion.io/contact","api":"https://alion.io/developers","about":"Alion is a live layer of people, companies and AI agents: who they are, whether they are real and active right now, what they do and how to work with them, readable by people and by agents and paid per call.","catalog":"https://alion.io/catalog.json","usage":{"tier":"crawler_verified","counted_by":"address","units_charged":1,"used_today":1451,"day_limit":null,"remaining_today":null,"minute_limit":300,"resets_at":"2026-10-20T00:00:00Z"}},"offers":[{"id":"company.slices","title":"One company in depth, by slice","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002,"plus_per_slice":{"credits":0.05,"usd":0.005}},"unit":"per company, plus each slice with data","note":"the employer in depth","call":{"mcp_tool":"get_company","arguments":{"id":3788806},"rest":"https://alion.io/mcp/rest/get_company?id=3788806"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.slices&for=job%2Fsportable-hardware-test-and-assembly-technician"},{"id":"market.stats","title":"A market slice: pay, demand and time to fill","status":"live","price":{"credits":1,"usd":0.1},"unit":"per slice","note":"pay, demand and time to fill for this role and place","call":{"mcp_tool":"market_stats"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=market.stats&for=job%2Fsportable-hardware-test-and-assembly-technician"},{"id":"job.search","title":"Open jobs by role, technology, place, pay and visa","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002},"unit":"per posting in a list","note":"similar open postings","call":{"mcp_tool":"search_jobs"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=job.search&for=job%2Fsportable-hardware-test-and-assembly-technician"},{"id":"company.verify","title":"Is this company real and active right now","status":"pilot","price":null,"unit":"per company","request":{"url":"https://alion.io/catalog/request","method":"POST","body":"{\"offer\": \"company.verify\", \"for\": \"job/sportable-hardware-test-and-assembly-technician\", \"note\": \"what you need it for\"}"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.verify&for=job%2Fsportable-hardware-test-and-assembly-technician"}]}
