In this role you will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining the APIs, services, tools and platform capabilities that power and maintain VA.gov. This role builds secure, scalable, and reliable backend systems that enable engineering teams across VA.gov to deliver digital services to millions of Veterans.\nThis is an excellent opportunity for someone who is passionate about developing reusable services, integrating enterprise systems, and contributing to platform architecture while maintaining high standards for security, reliability, and operational excellence.\nRESPONSIBILITIES\nDesign, develop, and maintain backend services using Ruby and Ruby on Rails\nBuild secure, scalable REST APIs supporting Platform and product teams\nDevelop reusable services and shared backend capabilities \nWrite clean, maintainable, and well-tested code\nImprove backend architecture, scalability, and performance\nBuild reusable libraries and services supporting multiple engineering teams \nParticipate in platform modernization and technical architecture initiatives \nContribute to service reliability and operational excellence\nIntegrate with internal and external enterprise systems \nDesign secure authentication and authorization patterns\nMaintain API contracts and documentation \nSupport service-to-service communication and distributed architectures \nDevelop automated tests and participate in code reviews \nSupport CI/CD pipelines and deployment automation \nTroubleshoot production issues and participate in incident response\nMonitor service performance and implement reliability improvements\nQUALIFICATIONS\nAbility to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance\nBachelor’s Degree, equivalent experience will be considered in lieu of degree\n3-5 years’ experience as a Backend or Full Stack Engineer\nStrong experience with Ruby and Ruby on Rails\nExperience designing and building RESTful APIs\nExperience with PostgreSQL or other relational databases\nExperience integrating with external APIs and services\nFamiliarity with background job processing (e.g., Sidekiq)\nExperience with Git and GitHub workflows\nExperience writing automated tests (RSpec preferred) \nUnderstanding of distributed systems and service-oriented architecture\nExperience working in Agile software development environments \nWORKING CONDITIONS\nStandard Business hours are Monday through Friday. Occasional extended or weekend hours may be required based on operational needs. Must have reliable internet service that allows for effective telecommuting.\nPAY RANGE\nThe base salary range for this position is $100,000 to $120,000 annually, depending on geographic work location, relevant experience, skills, education, internal equity, security clearance, and contract requirements.
