Mechanical engineers are involved in the design, development, and manufacture of devices and systems that have moving parts, across scales from nanotechnology to large aerospace systems. Mechanical engineers are critical innovators in almost every major field, including robotics and automation, aerospace and ocean engineering, materials and manufacturing, human health, energy, and environmental sustainability.\nLaunching in 2027, Nature Mechanical Engineering will publish high-impact research across all application areas of mechanical engineering, as well as fundamental mechanics of immediate interest to the community. As the first broad-scope, flagship journal dedicated to mechanical engineering, it will connect academia, industry, and policymakers, showcasing the critical role mechanical engineers play in building a better future.\nWe welcome applicantsacross broad mechanical engineering, and we are particularly interested in candidates with experience in mechanical materials, manufacturing and thermal engineering.\nRole responsibilities\nThe successful candidate will be part of the journal editorial team and play a key role in shaping, developing, and establishing the journal. \nHandle original research papers and work closely with editorial teams on all aspects of the editorial process, including manuscript selection, overseeing peer review and making well-reasoned decisions. \nContribute to content development and strategy in the represented area. \nCommission and edit content such as Reviews, Perspectives, and Comments, and write editorials. \nWork extensively with editors at other journals in the Nature portfolio. \nAttend conferences and visit research institutions. \nRequired Skills, Qualification and Experience:\nEssential:\nApplicants must have a PhD, with a strong track record in research relevant to the fields covered in the journal. \nBroad scientific knowledge and training. \nExcellent literary and communication skills. \nThe ability to absorb new areas of research. \nDesirable:\nPostdoctoral experience. \nPrevious editorial experience. \nApplications should include the following:\nA brief cover letter (one page) explaining your interest in the role, relevant experience, preferred office location, salary expectations, and current notice period. \nA CV detailing your relevant skills and experience, employment history, education, and any achievements demonstrating your suitability for the position.\nA concise discussion (maximum 500 words) of a research article that is suitable to be published in Nature Mechanical Engineering.
