As a Senior Buyer, you will take ownership of assigned suppliers and categories within a small Purchasing team, ensuring the effective procurement of electronic components, mechanical items, goods, materials and services. You will lead supplier negotiations, manage cost, quality, delivery and supply risk, and work cross-functionally to support production continuity, customer requirements and continuous improvement.\nWhat you can expect in this role (Job Responsibilities)\nWhile each day brings new opportunities at SPX, your core responsibilities will be:\nOwn assigned suppliers and purchasing categories, ensuring continuity of supply and achievement of cost, quality, delivery and service objectives\nLead quotation, sourcing and Purchase Order activities in accordance with business processes, approval requirements and delegated authority\nProactively manage the open Purchase Order book, supplier commitments and recovery plans to meet contracted and required delivery dates\nLead supplier negotiations covering price, lead time, payment terms, capacity and commercial conditions\nIdentify, develop and deliver cost reduction, value engineering and working-capital improvement opportunities\nMonitor supplier performance, lead business reviews and drive corrective actions for delivery, quality, cost or service issues\nAssess supply, capacity, obsolescence and single-source risks; establish mitigation, resourcing and recovery plans as required\nPartner with Planning, Production, Engineering, Quality, Inventory Control and Finance to align priorities and resolve complex supply issues\nMaintain accurate ERP purchasing data, including pricing, lead times, supplier confirmations, acknowledgements and delivery updates\nSupport inventory optimisation by reviewing shortages, excess stock, demand changes, minimum order quantities and supplier lead times\nMaintain supplier records and support Approved Supplier List governance, supplier selection and supplier development activities\nResolve complex delivery, invoice and commercial queries, escalating material business risks with clear recommendations\nLead purchasing process improvements and use data to improve supplier performance, Purchase Order accuracy and team efficiency\nProvide day-to-day guidance, coaching and support to Buyers and other team members while promoting consistent purchasing practices\nEvaluating supplier technical capabilities and quality standards.\nPartnering with Engineering on sourcing decisions, component selection, and specification reviews.\nReviewing technical drawings, BOMs, and material specifications.\nQualifying alternative suppliers and components based on technical and commercial requirements.\nConducting technical cost analyses and recommending cost-effective solutions.\nReading and interpreting engineering drawings and specifications.\nWhat we are looking for (Experience, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education)\nWe each bring something to the table, and we are looking for someone who has:\nRequired Experience\nProgressive experience in Buying, Procurement or Supply Chain, ideally within a UK manufacturing, engineering or technical environment\nDemonstrated experience managing suppliers, negotiations and purchasing priorities with measurable cost, delivery or service improvements\nStrong working knowledge of Purchase Orders, sourcing, supplier performance management and purchasing controls\nCommercially astute with strong negotiation, analytical and problem-solving skills\nAble to prioritise independently, make sound decisions under pressure and manage multiple complex requirements\nConfident influencing suppliers and internal stakeholders at different levels of the organisation\nClear and professional written, verbal, face-to-face and telephone communication skills\nStrong numerical capability with the ability to analyse spend, supplier performance and inventory data\nProven ability to identify and implement savings, risk mitigation and continuous improvement opportunities\nIntermediate MS Office Skills, ERP experience a plus\nPreferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities\nExperience of working in a manufacturing / engineering environment with experience of electronic components/ PCBA, assemblies and mechanical / machined parts\nOrganised and have good attention to detail\nContinuous Improvement activities and methodologies\nAbility to identify and manage problems and risks\nAnalytical with an enquiring mind\nWilling to undertake a variety of tasks from the transactional to the complex with multiple dependencies\nAble to build good relationships and attend and host supplier and internal meetings\nA desire to develop knowledge and skills in procurement and supply\nFlexible and supportive approach\nEducation & Certifications\nMinimum GCSEs in Maths and English, or equivalent UK qualification\nCIPS Level 4 or working towards a recognized CIPS qualification preferred; equivalent procurement experience will also be considered\nTravel & Working Environment\nHybrid (Currently 3 days on site)\nVisits to suppliers as required\nHow we live our culture\nOur culture is at the center of what we do and, more importantly, who we are.
