Reporting to the Controller, the Assistant Controller will ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial statements, manage the financial close process, and play a critical role in audit and control processes, system initiatives, and cross-functional support. This role requires strong leadership, technical expertise in property & casualty (P&C) insurance accounting, and exceptional communication skills to partner with key stakeholders across multiple functions.\nKey Responsibilities\nFinancial Close\nLead and coordinate the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close process for the Property business, ensuring timeliness and compliance with GAAP, STAT and company policies.\nFinancial Reporting\nPrepare, review, and analyze financial statements, schedules, and reports for both internal management and external regulatory filings.\nAudit & Controls\nManage internal and external audit processes for the Property business; maintain robust internal controls to ensure accuracy, reliability, and compliance with company policies.\nSystems/Data/Process Improvement\nPartner with Finance, IT, Reinsurance Accounting and other business units to identify and implement process, data, and systems enhancements. Support upgrades and integrations with a focus on data integrity and automation; Workday ERP experience is a plus.\nCross-Functional Support\nCollaborate with business partners across underwriting, claims, actuarial, FP&A, Reinsurance and other support functions to ensure financial information accuracy and support business initiatives.\nStaff Development\nTrain, mentor, and provide guidance to junior team members and foster a culture of continuous improvement.\nQualifications\nBachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; Master’s degree a plus\nCertified Public Accountant (CPA) strongly preferred\n8+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience within P&C insurance\nDemonstrated experience preparing and reviewing GAAP and statutory financial statements\nPrior experience with Workday Financials (or similar ERP systems) strongly preferred\nStrong understanding of internal controls and audit processes\nExcellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills\nProven ability to work collaboratively across multiple functions and manage competing priorities\nPreferred Skills\nAnalytical thinker with strong problem-solving abilities\nHigh attention to detail with ability to manage competing deadlines\nComfortable navigating change and driving process improvement\nAdvanced Excel and data analysis skills; experience with financial modeling a plus\nSalary Range: $150,000 - $200,000\nStarr is an equal opportunity employer, which means we'll consider all suitably qualified applicants regardless of gender identity or expression, ethnic origin, nationality, religion or beliefs, age, sexual orientation, disability status or any other protected characteristic.
