All applicants must reapply to be considered.\nThis is an entry-level position which serves as an Assistant Resident Engineer in the New Bern Construction Office. The position will assist the Resident Engineer in providing day-to-day management and contract administration of roadway and structure projects constructed by private contractors. The position is also responsible for the supervision of lower-level technicians. Specific duties will include but not be limited to performing project field inspections, preparing monthly/final pay estimates, creating, reviewing, and evaluating supplemental agreements and claims, ensure compliance with both NCDOT and external environmental agency erosion control and permit requirements, resolve constructability issues, and serve as DOT project representative for formal and informal meetings with contractors, utilities, local officials, media, and the general public.\nIn this position, you will be expected to communicate in a clear and concise manner, both orally and in writing and be able to make independent decisions using sound engineering judgment. Experience with computers, electronic tablets, Sharepoint, and HICAMS is preferred. You will be expected to apply Department safety standards and program to operations. You may be exposed to hazards including construction equipment, high traffic volumes, and heights over water or traffic and will be expected to work outside in varying temperature and weather conditions. Performing moderate physical activity such as walking, climbing, kneeling, and standing is needed for this position. You may need to work nights, weekends, and holidays as required. Safety toe shoes are needed for this position.\nThe selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle.\nThis Engineer I position will serve as a project inspector on roadway, utility, and structure projects, supporting higher level technicians and engineers in the administration of construction contracts.\nKnowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences\nSalary Grade and Salary Range: NC16 $57,983 - $101,470\nManagement prefers applicants with the following:\nExperience reading and interpreting highway construction plans and contracts.\nExperience directing, assisting or training subordinate employees.\nExperience administering contracts.\nKnowledge of the principles and practices of Civil Engineering.\nKnowledge and understanding of general concepts, practices, and theories used in construction inspection, and/or construction surveying.\nMinimum Education and Experience\nSome state job postings say you can qualify by an “equivalent combination of education and experience.” If that language appears below, then you may qualify through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience, OR a combination of both.
