About Us

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters!

Description of Work

Reporting to the Maintenance Supervisor at a medium custody male correctional facility, this position is responsible for performing routine, preventive and corrective maintenance. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Performing at the journey level in a mechanical trade with experience in at least one or more other trade areas to perform work assignments.

2. Ensuring assigned systems within the correctional facility and support buildings are maintained in a safe and efficient manner.

3. Performing ongoing preventive maintenance and continuous repair of water/piping systems throughout the facility which includes pneumatic mixing valves, domestic water systems, non-potable water systems, heating/cooling piping, and boiler.

4. Replacing and repairing commodes, sinks, water coolers, water heaters, garbage disposal, dishwasher, shower valves, water faucets, flush valves, and other related fixtures and equipment.

5. Supervising the work of skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled labor (including offenders) to assist in completing assigned tasks and provide support to other staff members performing trade skills during preventive maintenance or other duties assigned by the supervisor as deemed necessary.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the Minimum Education and Experience listed on the vacancy announcement. The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/Management Preferences are not required but applicants who possess the following skills are preferred:

  • Documented working knowledge of the processes and methods of the repair of many types of equipment and the ability to troubleshoot and repair the systems associated with the infrastructure of an industrial or commercial setting.

  • Documented working knowledge of the design of plumbing piping including water supply and sanitary drainage.

  • Documented working knowledge of the practices, methods, materials and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of building systems.

  • Documented ability to diagnose, prescribe and perform repair procedures on numerous types of equipment, and the skill to use related tools and equipment in the repair of plumbing, HVAC or electrical systems.

  • Documented ability to understand and work from blueprints or drawings

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with established working hours of Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm and may require working beyond normal work schedule to meet business needs.

About Warren Correctional Institution

Warren Correctional Institution is a mixed custody facility that houses minimum, medium, and close custody offenders. The current capacity of Warren CI is 809 male offenders, with most offenders being housed in medium custody. Offenders at Warren Correctional Institution may work at the Correction Enterprises Janitorial Products Plant, gaining marketable job skills and self-confidence participating in the manufacturingof soap and cleaning products.

Offenders at Warren Correctional Institution may also participate in vocational training and educational courses to earn their HiSet/GED. They may also participate in the At Both Ends of the Leash (ABEL) program, which provides an opportunity for offenders to train service animals for individuals with medical diagnoses or physical disabilities.
