Description of Work

The Nurse Director provides executive oversight for nursing operations at the Central Prison Healthcare Complex, ensuring the delivery of safe, effective, and evidence-based care within one of North Carolina’s most complex correctional healthcare environments. This role establishes strategic priorities for nursing services, develops operational plans, and ensures alignment with the mission and goals of Health Services and the Department of Adult Correction. The Nurse Director oversees inpatient medical and behavioral health nursing operations, urgent care, specialty clinics, perioperative services, Medical Records, and Utilization Review, while building high-performing teams, advancing professional nursing practice, optimizing staffing models, and driving quality and patient safety initiatives. As a key member of the executive leadership team, the Nurse Director collaborates with interdisciplinary leaders to evaluate performance, implement evidence-based improvements, strengthen workforce engagement and succession planning, and lead strategic initiatives that enhance healthcare operations, improve patient outcomes, and support the overall delivery of correctional healthcare across the Central Prison Healthcare Complex.

Job Duties

  • Provide executive leadership and strategic direction for nursing operations across all clinical service areas.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor operational plans that align nursing services with organizational goals.
  • Lead workforce development efforts, including staffing optimization, performance management, and succession planning.
  • Ensure compliance with state and federal laws, regulations, accreditation standards, and professional nursing practice requirements.
  • Drive quality improvement and patient safety initiatives across inpatient, outpatient, and specialty services.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement within nursing teams.
  • Partner with interdisciplinary leaders to evaluate organizational performance and implement evidence-based improvements.

• Oversee resource utilization, operational efficiency, and the delivery of patient-centered, evidence-based care.

Salary Range - $95,752.00 - $157,990.00

Comprehensive Health Services (CHS) delivers health services to individuals incarcerated in North Carolina state prisons. Our mission is to provide constitutionallyappropriate medical, mental health, dental, and pharmaceutical care that meets professional standards. CHS health professionals ensure access totimely, essential, and comprehensive services and programs that support the well-being of incarcerated individuals. This care is delivered by licensed staff and through partnerships with private providers and the University of North Carolina system.
