State Street is an American financial institution founded in Boston in 1792 and one of the oldest banks in the United States, though its modern business bears little resemblance to retail banking. It is one of the three dominant global custodians, holding trillions of dollars of assets in safekeeping for institutional investors and providing the fund accounting, administration and settlement infrastructure that asset managers depend on. Its investment arm State Street Global Advisors created the first American exchange traded fund with the SPDR S&P 500 Trust and remains one of the largest index managers in the world.

We are seeking a strategic and transformational technology executive to lead the Alternatives & Private Markets Technology organization. This Managing Director role will be responsible for defining and executing the technology strategy, delivery roadmap, modernization agenda, and operational excellence across Alternative Investment products.

This leader will partner closely with business, operations, product, risk, architecture, and engineering leaders to accelerate platform modernization, support business growth, improve scalability and resiliency, and reduce technology risk across a highly complex and business-critical portfolio. The role will have end-to-end accountability for technology strategy, engineering delivery, production stability, talent development, and financial management in technology organization.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Define and execute the long-term technology strategy for the Alternatives & Private Markets platform ecosystem.
  • Drive platform modernization, cloud adoption, architecture simplification, and technology transformation initiatives.
  • Develop and communicate a clear target-state architecture and multi-year investment roadmap aligned with business strategy and growth objectives.
  • Provide thought leadership on emerging technologies, industry trends, and operational models within the Alternatives and Private Markets industry.

Technology Delivery & Execution

  • Own end-to-end technology delivery across Private Markets platforms, including application development, quality engineering, release management, and production support.
  • Ensure predictable execution of strategic initiatives while maintaining operational excellence and client commitments.
  • Establish delivery governance, performance metrics, and execution standards across globally distributed teams.
  • Lead large-scale transformation programs involving platform consolidation, re-architecture, modernization, and decommissioning of legacy technologies.

Engineering & Operational Excellence

  • Drive engineering excellence through modern software development practices, automation, DevSecOps, and AI-enabled productivity.
  • Improve resiliency, availability, scalability, and performance of critical business platforms.
  • Lead technology risk reduction efforts, including remediation of technical debt, cybersecurity vulnerabilities, infrastructure obsolescence, and operational risk exposures.
  • Ensure regulatory, audit, and compliance requirements are embedded into engineering and operational processes.

Business Partnership & Stakeholder Management

  • Partner with business, operations, product, and client-facing leadership teams to align technology priorities with business outcomes.
  • Influence investment decisions, platform strategy, modernization priorities, and portfolio optimization efforts.
  • Serve as the senior technology representative for the Middle Office domain with executive stakeholders and governance forums.
  • Build strong partnerships across enterprise architecture, infrastructure, security, risk, and data organizations.

Talent & Organization Leadership

  • Lead and develop a global organization of engineering, architecture, delivery, and production support professionals.
  • Create a culture of accountability, innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Attract, retain, and develop top technology talent.
  • Build leadership bench strength and succession plans across critical technology functions.

Financial & Portfolio Management

  • Manage technology budgets, strategic investment plans, and vendor relationships.
  • Prioritize and optimize technology investments to maximize business value and risk reduction.
  • Drive portfolio rationalization, platform consolidation, and application lifecycle management decisions.

Qualifications

Required

  • 15+ years of progressive technology leadership experience, including executive leadership of large-scale engineering organizations.
  • Deep experience within Asset Management, Asset Servicing, Alternative Investments, Private Markets, Capital Markets, or Financial Services.
  • Proven track record leading large technology transformation and modernization programs.
  • Experience managing global teams and complex stakeholder environments.
  • Strong knowledge of software engineering, application architecture, cloud technologies, platform modernization, and operational resilience.
  • Demonstrated success delivering mission-critical platforms supporting front, middle, or back-office investment operations.
  • Exceptional executive communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or related field.

Preferred

  • Experience supporting Alternative Investment products or Fund Administration platforms.
  • Experience leading cloud migration and application modernization initiatives.
  • Knowledge of investment operations, transaction management, reconciliation, fund accounting, investor services, reporting, and regulatory obligations.
  • Advanced degree in Business, Engineering, Computer Science, or related discipline.
