This role is responsible for designing, implementing, and continuously improving automated policy guardrails across Azure management groups, subscriptions, and platform services to support secure, compliant, and scalable cloud delivery. Working closely with engineering teams, product management, and business stakeholders, the Senior Cloud Engineer will lead the automation of policy definitions, initiatives, assignments, exemptions, remediation patterns, and compliance validation processes within a modern CI/CD operating model.\nKey Responsibilities - Senior Cloud Engineer:\nDesign, implement, and automate Azure Policy definitions, initiatives, assignments, exemptions, and remediation workflows across enterprise Azure environments.\n\nBuild and maintain policy-as-code solutions using source control, CI/CD pipelines, and automation tooling such as Terraform, PowerShell, Python, Bicep, or equivalent engineering patterns.\n\nEstablish and evolve governance guardrails at management group and subscription scope to enforce security, compliance, configuration, and operational standards at scale.\n\nIntegrate Azure Policy validation into engineering delivery workflows so policy compliance is tested early and continuously throughout platform and application deployment processes.\n\nPartner with engineering and platform teams to define policy requirements, manage exceptions responsibly, and implement durable remediation and compliance improvement strategies.\n\nMonitor policy effectiveness, investigate non-compliance trends, troubleshoot complex governance issues, and improve policy coverage, reliability, and maintainability over time.\n\nContribute to broader cloud platform engineering priorities including infrastructure automation, security engineering, observability, documentation, and cross-functional collaboration.\n\nWhat We Value\nAn automation-first mindset and a commitment to building repeatable, maintainable solutions\n\nStrong technical depth, sound analytical judgment, and a practical approach to solving complex problems\n\nA disciplined focus on security, reliability, operational excellence, and continuous improvement\n\nEffective communication, collaboration, and the ability to influence outcomes across engineering and business stakeholders\n\nThe ability to work effectively in agile delivery environments with shared ownership and iterative improvement\n\nRequired Qualifications\n10+ years of experience in cloud engineering, cloud platform operations, cloud governance, or cloud security engineering, including substantial hands-on experience in Azure environments.\n\nStrong hands-on experience with Azure Policy, including policy definition authoring, initiative design, assignment management, exemptions, remediation tasks, and compliance evaluation in enterprise environments.\n\nDemonstrated experience building and operating Azure Policy as Code solutions using source control, automated deployment pipelines, and testing or validation workflows.\n\nStrong expertise with infrastructure as code, automation, and scripting using tools such as Terraform, PowerShell, Python, Bicep, and CI/CD platforms.\n\nExperience implementing governance guardrails across management groups, subscriptions, and shared platform services to support security, compliance, and operational standards at scale.\n\nStrong understanding of cloud security fundamentals, including access control, data protection, configuration governance, vulnerability reduction, and monitoring.\n\nProven ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues, identify root causes, and implement durable improvements that enhance governance outcomes, reliability, and maintainability.\n\nStrong communication, collaboration, and documentation skills, with the ability to work effectively across cross-functional and distributed teams.\n\nPreferred Qualifications\nExperience building or supporting shared cloud platforms, landing zones, or platform engineering capabilities at scale.\n\nKnowledge of Azure networking, hybrid connectivity, private access patterns, and secure service-to-service communication.\n\nExperience with observability, operational tooling, and cloud reliability practices within complex enterprise environments.\n\nFamiliarity with regulated environments and recognized control frameworks such as CIS, NIST, ISO 27001, or SOC 2.\n\nExperience working within agile delivery models and partnering with engineering teams to embed security and operational practices into delivery workflows.\n\nRelevant Microsoft Azure, security, governance, networking, or infrastructure-as-code certifications.\n\nAbout State Street:\nWork, Live and Grow.
