State Street is an American financial institution founded in Boston in 1792 and one of the oldest banks in the United States, though its modern business bears little resemblance to retail banking. It is one of the three dominant global custodians, holding trillions of dollars of assets in safekeeping for institutional investors and providing the fund accounting, administration and settlement infrastructure that asset managers depend on. Its investment arm State Street Global Advisors created the first American exchange traded fund with the SPDR S&P 500 Trust and remains one of the largest index managers in the world.

Who we are looking for

We are looking for a motivated, detail-oriented and client-focused individual to join the State Street Investment Management Japan Intermediary team as an Intermediary Client Services Associate. This entry-level role is suited to someone with transferable financial services experience who is seeking to build a career in client coverage and distribution. You will support the Head of Intermediary and Intermediary Relationship Managers in delivering high-quality client engagement, sales support and business development activity across the Japanese intermediary market.

The successful candidate will develop a strong understanding of State Street Investment Management's culture, investment philosophy, product capabilities and operational offering. Over time, you will be expected to communicate investment ideas, product information and client intelligence clearly and professionally, while building strong working relationships across Coverage, Marketing, Product, Investment Strategy, Capital Markets, Operations, Legal, Compliance and Client Service teams.

Why this role is important to us

The team you will be joining is part of State Street Investment Management, a global asset manager providing investment solutions and services to governments, institutions and financial intermediaries worldwide. The Japan Intermediary business is an important growth area for the firm, with a focus on strengthening client engagement, improving sales execution and expanding local market presence across key intermediary channels.

This role supports growth by helping the team deliver disciplined client coverage, accurate CRM and business intelligence, coordinated sales and marketing campaigns, timely client service and high-quality materials for client meetings. The role will contribute to the distribution and positioning of State Street IM's listed and unlisted product solutions, including State Street ETFs, ITMs and model portfolio capabilities, while providing a development pathway into intermediary relationship management and distribution.

Purpose of Role

This is an exciting entry-level opportunity to join State Street Investment Management's collaborative and client-focused Intermediary Client Coverage team in Japan. The role provides broad exposure to intermediary client relationships, investment solutions and business development activity in one of our key strategic markets.

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented individual with approximately 2-3 years of experience in financial services. Direct client coverage or distribution experience is not essential; this role is well suited to a candidate looking to transition into client coverage from another area of financial services such as operations, client service, fund administration, product support, investment support, marketing, business management, compliance, risk or sales support.

The successful candidate will support the Head of Intermediary and Intermediary Relationship Managers in Japan across client engagement, meeting preparation, CRM discipline, marketing and sales campaign coordination, client query management, and the preparation of client presentations, market intelligence and competitor analysis.

The role provides exposure to State Street IM's listed and unlisted product solutions, including State Street ETFs and ITMs, across intermediary client segments such as asset managers, regional banks, online brokers, traditional brokers, private wealth managers, private banks, family offices and financial advisers. The role will also involve partnering with Marketing, Product, Investment Strategy and Capital Markets teams to support client relationships and asset growth initiatives.

Together, we will continue to build a client-focused, collaborative and dynamic sales culture while creating a clear development pathway for high-potential talent seeking a long-term career in client coverage and distribution.

Major Responsibilities

What we need you to do:

  • Support the Head of Intermediary and Intermediary Relationship Managers in executing client coverage and business development activities across key Japanese intermediary channels, including regional banks, asset managers, online brokers, IFAs, traditional brokers, private wealth managers, private banks, family offices and financial advisers.
  • Assist with client relationship management by coordinating meetings, preparing briefing materials, managing follow-up actions, responding to client queries and supporting a high standard of client service.
  • Maintain strong sales discipline through effective use of Salesforce CRM, including client contact management, activity tracking, data accuracy, segmentation lists, campaign support and pipeline administration.
  • Prepare high-quality client presentations, account review materials, market updates, business development materials and internal reporting to support client engagement and sales initiatives.
  • Conduct competitor analysis, product research and client intelligence gathering to help identify business opportunities, client needs, industry trends and competitive positioning in the Japanese intermediary market.
  • Coordinate responses to retail client queries and work closely with outsourced client relations providers and internal stakeholders to support timely and professional resolution of client requests.
  • Assist with targeted sales and marketing campaigns, including Salesforce campaign support, EDM coordination, client-facing engagement activity, events, webinars and thought leadership distribution.
  • Develop a strong working knowledge of State Street IM's ETF, index, multi-asset, cash and other listed and unlisted investment solutions, and support clear communication of product information and investment ideas to clients and prospects.
  • Partner with regional Business Intelligence and Strategy teams to leverage client flow insights, support account planning and contribute to data-driven sales planning.
  • Build effective working relationships across Marketing, Product, Investment Strategy, Capital Markets, Operations, Compliance and Client Service teams to help deliver a seamless client experience.
  • Contribute to general team administration, business planning and strategic initiatives that support the continued growth of State Street IM's intermediary business in Japan.

Education & Experience

  • Approximately 1-3 years of experience within financial services, such as operations, client service, fund administration, product support, investment support, marketing, business management, compliance, risk, sales support or a related discipline.
  • Prior experience in client coverage, distribution or relationship management is desirable but not essential. This role is intended to provide a mobility opportunity for candidates with transferable financial services experience who are seeking to develop into client coverage and distribution.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver high-quality service to internal or external stakeholders, manage multiple priorities and work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
  • A strong interest in financial markets, investment management and client relationship management, with a desire to build a long-term career within intermediary client coverage.
  • Exposure to investment products, financial markets, client servicing, sales support, operations, business analysis or project coordination would be advantageous.
  • Understanding of the Japanese financial services industry and intermediary distribution channels is desirable; however, an eagerness to learn and develop expertise in this area is equally valued.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification in Finance, Economics, Business, Commerce, Marketing or another relevant discipline preferred.
  • Current Japan Securities Dealers Association (JSDA) Sales Representative Qualification Class I is preferred. Candidates without the qualification should be willing and able to obtain the relevant licensing within a reasonable timeframe.
  • Native-level Japanese language skills and business-level English proficiency, with the ability to work effectively across local, regional and global teams.

Specific Technical Knowledge / Qualifications

  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly PowerPoint and Excel, with the ability to prepare clear and accurate client materials and analysis.
  • Experience using Salesforce or another CRM platform is beneficial but not required; willingness to develop strong Salesforce capability is expected.
  • Interest in ETFs, index investing, multi-asset solutions, cash strategies and other listed and unlisted investment solutions.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in Japanese, with business-level English capability.
  • Good analytical skills and attention to detail, with the ability to interpret information, prepare materials and support business development activity.
  • Experience with market data, product research or analytical tools such as Morningstar Direct would be advantageous but is not essential.
  • General understanding of financial markets, investment products and asset allocation, with a willingness to continue developing technical knowledge.

Personal Profile

What we need you to be and possess:

  • A strong interest in financial markets, investment management, and building a career in client coverage and distribution.
  • A proactive and growth-oriented mindset, with a demonstrated willingness to learn, develop new skills, and take on increasing levels of responsibility.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build positive relationships and collaborate effectively with colleagues, clients, and business partners.
  • A client-focused approach, with a commitment to delivering high-quality service and contributing to positive client outcomes.
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Analytical and intellectually curious, with the ability to gather, interpret, and communicate market, client, and business information effectively.
  • Comfortable working both independently and as part of a collaborative team, demonstrating initiative, ownership, and accountability for assigned responsibilities.
  • Adaptable and resilient, with the ability to navigate change, embrace new challenges, and contribute positively within a dynamic business environment.
  • Professional, ethical, and trustworthy, demonstrating sound judgement and a commitment to the highest standards of integrity and conduct.
  • Enthusiastic about working in a diverse, inclusive, and multicultural organisation, with the ability to collaborate across local, regional, and global teams.
  • Committed to continuous professional development and building expertise in investment products, client relationship management, and intermediary distribution.
  • Aligned with State Street IM's values of collaboration, accountability, innovation, and client focus.
