State Street is an American financial institution founded in Boston in 1792 and one of the oldest banks in the United States, though its modern business bears little resemblance to retail banking. It is one of the three dominant global custodians, holding trillions of dollars of assets in safekeeping for institutional investors and providing the fund accounting, administration and settlement infrastructure that asset managers depend on. Its investment arm State Street Global Advisors created the first American exchange traded fund with the SPDR S&P 500 Trust and remains one of the largest index managers in the world.

Who we are looking for

We are seeking an experienced Senior Depositary Manager at Assistant Vice President level to lead a Depositary service area. The role has overall responsibility for approximately 30-40 FTE across a layered organization, from junior Associate 1 roles to experienced subject-matter experts and Officers who each manage teams.

The successful candidate will combine strong people leadership with deep Depositary expertise in private equity, real estate and other alternative investment funds. The role is accountable for safe, controlled and efficient delivery across cash-flow monitoring, safekeeping and ownership verification, and oversight activities, while maintaining effective relationships with senior stakeholders across locations and the wider organization.

Why this role is important to us

You will be joining the Investment Services function that allows us to deliver a comprehensive, holistic approach to each client relationship - for asset managers and asset owners, insurance companies, and official institutions globally. It means our client-facing functions work together to bring the very best solutions and services the firm has to offer - across all of our locations, products, and capabilities.

Join us if making your mark on the long-lasting client relationships we build is a challenge you are up for.

What you will be responsible for

As Senior Depositary Manager you will:

  • Lead an area of approximately 30-40 FTE through a layered management structure that includes Officers responsible for teams of around 6-10 FTE, subject-matter experts and junior employees.

  • Set clear objectives and accountability for managers, ensuring effective organization, workload allocation, supervision and succession coverage.

  • Coach and develop managers and specialists, strengthen technical capability, and maintain a sustainable talent and succession pipeline.

  • Establish an inclusive, high-performance culture based on ownership, collaboration, transparent communication and adherence to corporate and departmental standards.

  • Oversee timely and consistent performance management, development planning and recognition across the area.

Operational and client delivery

  • Own day-to-day delivery of Depositary processes, ensuring service quality, timeliness, capacity and control objectives are met.

  • Maintain effective oversight of cash-flow monitoring, safekeeping and ownership verification, and oversight activities for private equity, real estate and other alternative investment funds.

  • Use management information, key performance indicators and key risk indicators to identify trends, resolve service issues and make informed decisions.

  • Lead service reviews and operational forums, provide clear reporting to senior management, and ensure that material issues are escalated promptly.

  • Build effective relationships with clients, Depositary colleagues and cross-functional stakeholders, and coordinate priorities across locations.

  • Ensure an appropriate operating model, clear ownership and effective business-continuity arrangements across the area.

Risk and regulatory oversight

  • Maintain a robust control environment and ensure compliance with applicable Depositary obligations, internal policies, procedures and governance standards.

  • Understand the risk profile of the area, ensure that risks and control weaknesses are identified and assessed, and drive timely remediation to sustainable closure.

  • Oversee the design, implementation and consistent execution of procedures and controls, including appropriate evidence, review and escalation.

  • Lead or support audit, regulatory, client and risk reviews, ensuring complete and timely responses and effective follow-up of findings.

  • Promote risk awareness and sound judgement at every organizational level, with clear accountability for quality and control outcomes.

Resource and performance management

  • Translate forecast volumes and business priorities into workforce, skills and technology requirements.

  • Manage capacity, productivity and seniority mix within agreed budget and headcount parameters.

  • Ensure resources are deployed effectively across competing priorities and that material capacity constraints are escalated with practical options.

  • Monitor service quality, control effectiveness, productivity, delivery against deadlines, audit outcomes and stakeholder satisfaction.

  • Contribute to financial planning, business strategy, service development and organization-wide people initiatives.

Change and transformation

  • Lead transformation and continuous-improvement initiatives that improve scalability, resilience, quality and the client experience.

  • Champion standardized processes, clear target operating models and appropriate automation while protecting regulatory and control requirements.

  • Plan and oversee migrations of work between locations, including readiness assessment, knowledge transfer, resourcing, governance and post-implementation stabilization.

  • Represent the area in departmental, regional and global programmers and ensure that changes are embedded effectively.

What we value

  • People-leadership experience, including experience leading sizeable, multi-level operational teams.

  • Strong judgement and the ability to make balanced decisions across service, risk, people and commercial priorities.

  • Clear and credible communication with employees, clients, senior executives, auditors and control functions.

  • Strong organization, planning and prioritization in a complex, deadline-driven environment.

  • Data-driven performance management, with the ability to interpret operational and risk information and convert it into action.

  • Commitment to quality, continuous improvement and constructive challenge.

  • Ability to build effective relationships and influence across locations and organizational boundaries.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Eight or more years of relevant experience in Depositary, fund services, custody, audit or a related financial-services environment, including at least three years of team-management experience.

  • Strong technical knowledge of Depositary obligations and operating practices, with substantial experience supporting private equity, real estate and other alternative investment funds.

  • Practical knowledge of cash-flow monitoring, safekeeping and ownership verification, and fund oversight, including the associated risks, controls and escalation requirements.

  • Demonstrated experience in a management role with responsibility for managers, subject-matter experts and a sizeable operational organization.

  • Working knowledge of related functions such as fund accounting, custody, transfer agency or investment compliance and their interaction with the Depositary.

  • Fluent written and spoken English.

  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office, AI tools and the ability to work effectively with operational workflow, reporting and risk-management tools.

Preferred Education

  • Degree in finance, accounting, business, law or a related discipline.

  • Relevant professional qualification, completed or in progress, such as ACCA, CIMA, ACA, CPA or CFA.

Work Requirement

  • Hybrid working in line with applicable workplace regulations and company policy, currently requiring office presence three days per week.

  • Task-based working time.
