State Street is an American financial institution founded in Boston in 1792 and one of the oldest banks in the United States, though its modern business bears little resemblance to retail banking. It is one of the three dominant global custodians, holding trillions of dollars of assets in safekeeping for institutional investors and providing the fund accounting, administration and settlement infrastructure that asset managers depend on. Its investment arm State Street Global Advisors created the first American exchange traded fund with the SPDR S&P 500 Trust and remains one of the largest index managers in the world.

State Street Markets is seeking an experienced lawyer to join its APAC Markets Legal team. This role offers hands-on exposure to a broad range of Markets products across APAC, working closely with trading, sales, and regional stakeholders. You will be a trusted legal advisor on live transactions, regulatory changes, and new product initiatives in one of State Street’s most dynamic growth regions.

About State Street

State Street is a leading global financial services provider to institutional investors, with approximately US$53.8 trillion in assets under custody and administration and US$5.7 trillion in assets under management as of December 31, 2025. We operate in more than 100 geographic markets worldwide and employ approximately 52,000 professionals globally. In Asia Pacific, State Street continues to invest in its Markets servicing and technology capabilities, offering legal professionals the opportunity to support a large-scale, sophisticated business with strong regional and global connectivity.

Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the Head of Legal for Markets, APAC, you will work as part of a collaborative regional and international legal team, with regular exposure to senior business and legal stakeholders across the region and globally. Responsibilities include:

  • Advising the Markets business across Asia Pacific on applicable financial and banking regulations and related regulatory developments
  • Taking a lead role on transactions and initiatives within the Markets business, with appropriate supervision and escalation as required
  • Drafting and negotiating a wide range of Markets documentation, including FX and derivatives, securities lending and cleared and uncleared repo agreements, brokerage and trading platform agreements and other relevant transactional agreements
  • Supporting cross-border transactions and regulatory-driven initiatives involving multiple APAC jurisdictions, balancing legal risk with business objectives
  • Advising on product development and jurisdictional expansion initiatives
  • Collaborating closely with Markets Legal colleagues across APAC, the US and EMEA, as well as internal partners such as Risk, Compliance and Tax
  • Developing and maintaining legal templates and internal guidelines to support efficient and consistent outcomes

The work spans vanilla and structured transactions, securities financing, platform arrangements and evolving regulatory initiatives across APAC.

Development and Career Path

This role offers a steep but supported learning curve across Markets products and APAC regulatory regimes. You will gain broad exposure to the regional Markets platform, work closely with senior legal leaders and global Markets Legal teams, and build a strong foundation for continued growth as a senior in-house Markets lawyer.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Qualified lawyer admitted in a common law jurisdiction (e.g. Hong Kong, UK, US or equivalent)
  • Typically 5+ years of relevant legal experience gained in a leading law firm and/or in-house legal team within financial services. Prior in-house experience is advantageous.
  • Strong drafting and negotiation experience with financial markets documentation
  • Solid understanding of financial and bank regulatory frameworks
  • Exposure to multiple APAC jurisdictions and key regional regulatory considerations
  • Fluency in a second language helpful but not required for the role
  • Commercial, solutions-oriented mindset with strong stakeholder management skills
  • Collaborative team player with excellent communication skills, adaptive mindset and sensitivity to a diverse, cross-cultural environment

Why Join State Street Markets Legal?

  • Exposure to a global Markets platform with a strong APAC footprint
  • High-quality transactional and regulatory work with cross-border scope
  • Close collaboration with experienced regional and global legal teams
  • Supportive, inclusive culture with a focus on professional development and long-term growth
