We strive to build long-term customer loyalty.\nThe Controller will play a critical role in building a world-class Accounting and Financial Reporting function to help scale and support the company’s rapidly growing group of businesses. This position will partner with all other departments within the organization to improve processes, data quality and the timeliness of financial information. The Controller will drive and implement remediation plans to strengthen the control environment and develop best-in-class processes using system automation and relevant tools. This position will have strategic oversight of the Accounting and Financial Reporting function company wide. This candidate will be responsible for producing timely financial statements in compliance with US GAAP to inform the founders, investors and financial partners of the company.\nThis position reports to the Sr Controller and exists primarily to support the Sr Controller in overseeing staff and delivering the monthly close on time. The Controller owns day-to-day management of the accounting staff: tracking deadlines, following up on open items, and providing hands-on guidance on proper reporting across all balance sheet accounts and supporting schedules, with particular emphasis on inventory accounting in a vertically integrated cultivation, manufacturing, distribution and retail environment.\nThe Controller also directly manages the offshore accounting team, reviewing workloads and timesheets, keeping the team on task, helping stateside staff offload appropriate work to them, and ensuring their work supports the stateside team's priorities and deadlines.\nDuties and Responsibilities:\nDirectly supervise and coach a large accounting team on behalf of the Sr Controller; actively track staff workload and progress day to day, follow up on open items and overdue tasks, and hold the team accountable for hitting month-end close, reporting, audit and tax deadlines \nPerform detailed review of complex workpapers, account reconciliations, and consolidation schedules prepared by staff and managers. Serve as the technical resource for staff on all balance sheet accounts and supporting schedules, including cash, accounts receivable, inventory, prepaids, fixed assets and depreciation, leases, accrued liabilities, debt, intercompany and equity; set the standard for reconciliation format, support and review; oversee all general ledger accounts, sub-ledgers and reporting systems to ensure compliance with GAAP and regulatory requirements \nProvide hands-on guidance to staff on proper accounting and reporting, especially for inventory, including inventory reconciliations (perpetual to GL and to physical counts), standard and actual costing, cost roll-ups across cultivation, manufacturing and distribution, intercompany transfers and margin eliminations, reserves for obsolescence and shrink, and COGS cut-off \nOversee the effectiveness of corporate accounting and financial reporting internal controls. Assist the Sr Controller in the implementation of efficient accounting processes and controls across the organization \nManage and support internal and external audits \nManage the offshore accounting team: assign and prioritize their work, review workloads and timesheets, keep them on task, and help stateside staff offload appropriate work to them so the offshore team effectively supports the stateside close, reconciliation and reporting needs \nManage the accounting transition and financial reporting for new acquisitions/development projects; assist with due diligence for acquisitions, dispositions, or new development projects \nCommunicate and present clearly to all levels of the organization, including senior management \nOther duties as assigned \nRequirements\nExcellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex accounting matters clearly to non-finance leaders, staff and external partners \nStrong business acumen and problem-solving skills \nDemonstrated ability to drive business initiatives \nStrong attention to detail, demonstrated integrity and professionalism \nAbility to multitask and prioritize diverse tasks with a proven ability to meet hard deadlines \nAbility to work autonomously and take ownership \nAble to create, maintain and build professional relationships and rapport \nHave a strong desire to grow professionally and personally \nHave a sound knowledge of market trends \nEducation & Experience:\nBA/BS/BBA degree in accounting or a related degree; MBA or MAcc preferred \nCertified Public Accountant (CPA) designation required \n7-15 years of relevant financial accounting experience in a managerial role, ideally a combination of public accounting (Big 4 or regional equivalent) and industry experience \nHands-on experience in a vertically integrated manufacturing and distribution organization required; deep understanding of multi-entity operations (cultivation, manufacturing, distribution and retail), including intercompany transactions, eliminations, cost allocations and consolidated reporting \nStrong working knowledge of inventory accounting required, including inventory valuation, standard and actual costing, cost roll-ups, reserves and physical count procedures, with the ability to teach these to staff \nOutstanding technical accounting skill; demonstrated knowledge of U.S. GAAP including ASC 606, ASC 842 and ASC 330; ability to review and advise on all balance sheet accounts and supporting schedules \nProven track record of leading, developing and holding accountable a large accounting team across multiple entities, including experience managing offshore or remote accounting resources and coordinating their work with an onshore team \nStrong knowledge of all functions and systems for internal controls, internal and external reporting, audit processes, and tax \nExperience managing an ERP optimization project; familiarity with Odoo or similar ERP system preferred \nWorking knowledge of SQL / Power Query and experience driving system automation (e.g., automated reconciliations, ERP integrations, reporting pipelines) a plus, but not required; we will provide training, so we are looking for a fast learner with a genuine interest in picking up new tools and technology. \nPhysical Requirements:\nThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an associate to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
