Responsibilities

Position Purpose: The Database Administrator (DBA) is responsible for the administration, performance, availability, security, and automation of StoneX’s database platforms across on-premises and cloud environments. The role focuses on ensuring highly available, secure, and performant database services while leveraging automation, AI-driven tools, and modern operational practices to improve efficiency and reliability.

The DBA will support Microsoft SQL Server and Azure PostgreSQL Flexible Server environments, while developing broader expertise across MongoDB, cloud-native database services, and modern database automation practices.

Primary duties will include:

Database Operations & Support

• Administer and support Microsoft SQL Server and Azure PostgreSQL Flexible Server environments across production and non-production systems.
• Participate in a 24x7 on-call rotation and provide support for critical incidents across SQL Server and Azure PostgreSQL Flexible Server platforms.
• Ensure database availability, stability, and performance in line with business SLAs.
• Perform database installations, upgrades, patching, migrations, and configuration management for SQL Server and Azure PostgreSQL Flexible Server.
• Manage and maintain high availability and disaster recovery solutions, including SQL Server Always On Availability Groups, Failover Clustering, Azure PostgreSQL Flexible Server replication, backup/restore, and cloud-native HA options.

Performance Monitoring & Optimisation

• Monitor SQL Server and Azure PostgreSQL Flexible Server performance using enterprise monitoring, observability, and platform-native tooling.
• Proactively identify and resolve performance bottlenecks across database engines.
• Conduct database tuning activities including query optimisation, indexing strategies, statistics maintenance, configuration improvements, and workload analysis.
• Develop and maintain health checks, monitoring standards, and performance baselines for SQL Server and Azure PostgreSQL Flexible Server estates.
• Perform root cause analysis for database incidents and provide recommendations for long-term platform improvements.

Backup, Recovery & Data Protection

• Manage backup and recovery solutions using Cohesity, Delphix, Azure-native tooling, Azure PostgreSQL Flexible Server backup patterns, and SQL Server technologies.
• Ensure recovery procedures align with defined RPO and RTO requirements across SQL Server and Azure PostgreSQL Flexible Server workloads.
• Regularly test backup, restore, point-in-time recovery, and disaster recovery processes.
• Support data protection, masking, refresh, retention, and recovery practices for production and non-production database environments.

Cloud & Platform Services

• Support database workloads hosted in Microsoft Azure.
• Manage Azure SQL services, Azure Database for Azure PostgreSQL Flexible Server Flexible Server, and related cloud database technologies.
• Assist with cloud migrations, platform modernisation initiatives, and cost optimisation efforts.
• Support Azure PostgreSQL Flexible Server cloud operational patterns including monitoring, backup, high availability, security configuration, patching, and migration readiness.
• Utilise AI and automation capabilities to improve cloud operations and monitoring.

Automation & AI

• Develop automation solutions using PowerShell, Python, T-SQL, Azure PostgreSQL Flexible Server tooling, and APIs.
• Implement Infrastructure as Code and automation frameworks where appropriate.
• Leverage AI tools such as Microsoft Copilot, GPTs, and monitoring analytics to accelerate troubleshooting and operational efficiency.
• Build automated monitoring, alerting, remediation, health check, and reporting solutions for SQL Server and Azure PostgreSQL Flexible Server platforms.
• Promote responsible AI usage while maintaining accountability for technical decisions.

Governance, Security & Compliance

• Ensure database platforms comply with security standards, regulatory requirements, and company policies.
• Support audit, vulnerability remediation, access review, encryption, and security improvement initiatives.
• Identify operational risks and implement appropriate controls across SQL Server and Azure PostgreSQL Flexible Server environments.
• Contribute to database standards, documentation, operational runbooks, and best practices.

Collaboration & Continuous Improvement

• Work closely with application teams, infrastructure teams, architects, and business stakeholders.
• Support Agile delivery processes and project initiatives.
• Contribute to knowledge sharing, documentation, mentoring, and cross-skilling between SQL Server and Azure PostgreSQL Flexible Server disciplines.
• Continuously evaluate emerging database technologies, Azure PostgreSQL Flexible Server ecosystem capabilities, and operational improvements.

Qualifications

To land this role you will need:

• 2-5 years of Database Administration experience.
• Strong Microsoft SQL Server administration skills (SQL Server 2016+).
• Working knowledge or hands-on experience with Azure PostgreSQL Flexible Server administration, with a strong willingness to develop deeper Azure PostgreSQL Flexible Server expertise.
• Experience with performance tuning and optimisation across relational database platforms.
• Experience with backup and recovery strategies, including point-in-time recovery concepts.
• Experience with SQL Server Always On Availability Groups, clustering technologies, and/or Azure PostgreSQL Flexible Server high availability and replication concepts.
• T-SQL development and troubleshooting; exposure to Azure PostgreSQL Flexible Server SQL, PL/pgSQL, psql, pgAdmin, or similar tooling is desirable.
• Database monitoring, observability, health checks, and operational reporting.
• Azure database services and cloud platforms, including Azure SQL and Azure Database for Azure PostgreSQL Flexible Server Flexible Server.
• Experience supporting business-critical systems in a 24x7 environment.
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.

What makes you stand out:

• Experience with Azure PostgreSQL Flexible Server, MongoDB or other open-source databases.
• Azure PostgreSQL Flexible Server administration skills including backup/restore, replication, extensions, security, monitoring, performance tuning, and version upgrades.
• Scripting and automation experience using PowerShell, Python, Bash, or similar languages.
• Exposure to DevOps and CI/CD tooling such as GitHub, Terraform, Liquibase, Ansible, or Azure DevOps.
• Experience with Delphix, Cohesity, Redgate, SolarWinds, Grafana, Azure Monitor, or similar enterprise tools.
• Knowledge of financial services environments and regulatory requirements.
• Microsoft Azure certifications, Azure PostgreSQL Flexible Server certifications, or relevant database certifications.
