About the role

Job Summary

The Industrial Motor & Generator Mechanic disassembles, inspects, cleans, repairs, reassembles, and supports testing of heavy-industrial motors, generators, pumps, and related rotating equipment. This role supports mission-critical equipment for utilities, water infrastructure, mining, manufacturing, semiconductor, aerospace, agriculture, food production, and other industrial markets.

Mechanically inclined candidates from developing technicians to experienced mechanics are encouraged to apply; direct motor shop experience is helpful but not required for all candidates.

Mechanics work in a skilled, team-oriented shop alongside winders, machinists, welders, test technicians, engineers, and supervisors to solve challenging repair problems together.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Disassemble, inspect, repair, test, and reassemble mission-critical industrial motors, generators, pumps, gearboxes, and related electromechanical equipment used in heavy industry.
  • Work on high-value rotating equipment serving power, water, mining, manufacturing, semiconductor, aerospace, agriculture, food production, and other industrial markets.
  • Inspect and evaluate equipment condition, damage, failure evidence, repair requirements, and serviceability.
  • Perform low-voltage and high-voltage electrical diagnostic testing and related electrical inspections on motors and generators.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical and electromechanical problems using test results, inspection findings, drawings, repair history, and hands-on experience.
  • Remove, install, fit, adjust, and repair mechanical components during disassembly, reassembly, shop repair, and on-site service.
  • Inspect mechanical and electrical components for wear, damage, overheating, tracking, contamination, fit issues, and other repair concerns.
  • Measure, verify, and record critical dimensions using micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, bore gauges, and other precision measuring tools.
  • Identify, match-mark, organize, protect, clean, and document parts during teardown and repair.
  • Perform alignment, fit checks, mechanical inspection, electrical checks, operational checks, and final inspection.
  • Operate industrial motor repair tools and equipment after proper training.
  • Read and apply work instructions, repair scopes, drawings, customer specifications, and quality requirements.
  • Work directly with skilled teams to complete repairs correctly and efficiently.
  • Document inspection results, test results, measurements, repair findings, and work performed.
  • Follow all safety, quality, environmental, electrical test, lifting, rigging, and shop procedures.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, parts, and work areas in a clean, organized, and safe condition.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Safe use of hand tools, power tools, and measuring instruments.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions, work instructions, and safety procedures.
  • Strong organization, documentation habits, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team after proper training.
  • Clear communication with supervisors and coworkers.
  • Strong attention to safety, quality, and workmanship.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Mechanical aptitude and strong willingness to learn.
  • Ability to safely perform physical work in an industrial shop environment.
  • Ability to follow safety procedures, work instructions, and quality requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in industrial maintenance, mechanical repair, rotating equipment repair, automotive, diesel, heavy equipment, aviation, military, manufacturing, millwright, pump repair, or related trades.
  • Experience working with bearings, seals, fits, shafts, housings, couplings, or rotating equipment.
  • Experience using micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, bore gauges, or similar precision tools.
  • Basic electrical or electromechanical troubleshooting experience.
  • Rigging, forklift, crane, or material handling experience.

Work Schedule, Service, and Tooling Requirements

  • Work schedule may vary based on customer and shop needs.
  • Overtime may be required.
  • Weekend work, shift work, call-outs, or occasional travel may be required based on customer emergencies or project requirements.
  • Employees are responsible for basic personal hand tools commonly used in their trade. Sulzer provides specialty tools, shop equipment, and job-specific tooling.

Safety and Physical Requirements

  • Promote safety for self and others at all times.
  • Report unsafe conditions, injuries, near misses, equipment damage, and safety concerns promptly.
  • Wear required PPE, which may include safety footwear, eye protection, hearing protection, gloves, hard hat, respirator, or other job-specific protection.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, reach, use hands and fingers, and work around industrial machinery.
  • Ability to lift, move, tighten, adjust, and secure parts and equipment as required.
  • Ability to work safely around cranes, forklifts, rotating equipment, electrical equipment, cleaning processes, and heavy components.
