These systems play a critical role in the wider payout flow: they manage how and when merchants receive their funds and support the configuration needed for reliable payouts across markets.\nAbout the Role:\nPayouts are one of the most important parts of the merchant experience. When a merchant expects to receive their money, the process needs to be reliable, transparent and predictable.\nIn this role, you’ll work on systems that directly support the movement of funds to SumUp merchants. You’ll help modernise existing components, build new capabilities and contribute to a platform that needs to operate reliably across markets and at scale.\nThis is a role for an engineer who enjoys solving complex backend problems, working with distributed systems and balancing the needs of a legacy platform with the opportunity to build something better.\nOur Stack:\nJava (minimal setup, Spring Boot), Kafka Streams, PostgreSQL/RDBMS, RestEasy, VueJS.\nWhat you'll do:\nDevelop and maintain the payout profile and payout scheduling components of SumUp’s Payments Processing Platform.\nHelp transition the existing legacy system to a new event-driven microservices architecture.\nDesign and build scalable backend services using Java and Spring Boot.\nWork across the full software development lifecycle, from technical design and implementation to testing, deployment and production support.\nBuild reliable, maintainable and well-tested services that support money movement and merchant payouts.\nContribute to API design, data flows and integration patterns across the Payments Platform.\nInvestigate operational issues, identify root causes and implement permanent fixes.\nParticipate in technical discussions, architecture reviews and code reviews.\nCollaborate with engineers, QA, Product and adjacent Payments teams to deliver high-quality solutions.\nHelp improve the team’s engineering practices, operational readiness and system maintainability.\nYou will be a great fit if you have:\nStrong professional experience across the full software development lifecycle.\nHands-on experience building backend services with Java and Spring Boot.\nExperience working with distributed systems and microservices architectures.\nUnderstanding of event-driven systems, service integration and reliable data flows.\nExperience designing, building and maintaining APIs.\nStrong problem-solving skills and a structured approach to investigating complex issues.\nExperience writing production-quality, maintainable and well-tested code.\nAn ownership mindset and willingness to take responsibility for the systems you build and operate.\nA collaborative approach and the ability to communicate clearly with technical and non-technical stakeholders.\nThe ability to work autonomously while contributing actively to a team environment.\nA tool-agnostic mindset and the ability to learn new technologies pragmatically.\nIt would be a plus if you have\nExperience building a system or service from scratch.\nExperience with payments, payouts or other financial technology products.\nFamiliarity with Kubernetes, Docker and AWS.\nExperience with observability, incident management and production support.\nExperience modernising or migrating legacy systems.\nKnowledge of payout flows, settlement, reconciliation or transaction processing.\nYou don’t need to have experience with every technology listed above.
