The company is moving quickly to launch the first aircraft designed specifically for swarming, as well as the Command & Control software to mobilize swarms of thousands of heterogeneous autonomous assets and empower human operators to achieve superhuman results.\nThe team has created and exited multiple startups, negotiated defense deals worth billions of dollars, and designed and built 30+ novel aircraft, with aerospace experience from Scaled Composites, Airbus, Archer Aviation, Blue Origin, and Boom Supersonic.\nAbout this Role\nWe are building a Group 5 autonomous aircraft and driving it to first flight. We are in detailed design with tooling in work, and we are looking for a lead engineer to own the largest structures on that aircraft: wing, fuselage, and empennage.\nYou will set the design approach for large composite primary structure, make the calls on architecture and joints, and lead other structures engineers to first flight.\nThis is a hands-on technical leadership role. You will spend most of your time designing and reviewing structure, not managing. You will also be the senior voice in trades between weight, cost, schedule, and producibility on parts that are measured in meters, not inches.\nWhat you will do\nOwn the design of major airframe structure, building on the configuration and trade space already established: wing box, fuselage sections, empennage, and large bonded assemblies\nOwn and mature the structural architecture for large composite parts, including laminate strategy, core usage, joint philosophy, and load paths\nLead and mentor a team of structures design engineers, setting standards for models, drawings, and design reviews\nDrive trades on part count, tooling approach, and assembly sequence with manufacturing and program leadership\nSolve the problems unique to big parts: dimensional control over large spans, thermal growth in cure, handling and fixturing, and transport constraints\nWork daily with stress, M&P, and composites manufacturing to close margins and keep the build moving\nOwn design maturity through PDR, CDR, first article, structural test, and first flight\nWhat we look for\nBS or MS in Mechanical, Aerospace, or a related engineering field\n8+ years designing aircraft structure, with direct ownership of large composite primary structure such as wings, wing boxes, fuselage barrels or panels, or empennage\nDeep knowledge of composite design and manufacturing at scale: laminate design, large tool design implications, cure behavior, bonded and bolted joints\nExperience leading engineers through a full development cycle, from concept through structural test or flight\nProficiency in CAD (NX, CATIA, or SolidWorks) and strong GD&T, including datum strategies for large assemblies\nHands-on mindset. You have stood next to your parts on the shop floor and changed the design because of what you saw\nBias toward speed. You make decisions with incomplete data and iterate\nAbility to work onsite in Oxnard, CA\nNice to have\nExperience on a clean-sheet aircraft development program\nFamiliarity with prepreg, infusion, or out-of-autoclave processes for large parts\nExperience with FEA tools (Nastran, Abaqus, HyperMesh) or close partnership with stress teams\nExperience taking large structure through static and fatigue test\nStartup or small-team experience where you owned major program scope\nITAR requirement\nTo conform to U.S. Government export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.\nSwarm Aero is an equal opportunity employer. We value diverse backgrounds and experiences and make employment decisions without regard to race, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, veteran status, or disability.\nWhat We Offer\nMeaningful equity in a high-growth defense technology company\n\nCompetitive base salary commensurate with experience\n\nMedical, dental, vision, and 401k\n\nPTO and paid sick leave\n\nMonthly wellness stipend\n\nDaily catered lunch (office)\n\nPaid parental leave\n\nDirect impact on a critical national security mission\n\nA world-class team of engineers and operators solving genuinely hard problems","description_format":"text","description_chars":4400,"description_truncated":false,"requirements":{"experience_years_min":8,"management_years_min":null,"team_size_min":null,"manages_managers":false,"education":{"level":"master","optional":false},"security_clearance":false,"languages":[]},"benefits":["401k plan","Equity","Parental leave"],"hiring_locations":[{"name":"United States","iso":"US","kind":"country"}],"hiring_excludes":[],"relocation_offered":false,"industries":[],"lifecycle":[{"event":"open","at":"2026-10-01T10:51:08Z"}],"liveness":{"score":33,"band":"fade","label":"Fading","p_open":1,"p_active":0.594,"p_room":0.55,"age_days":41,"expected_fill_days":31,"reasons":["conf:8","win:tail"],"computed_at":"2026-10-01T18:55:38Z"},"pay":{"stated_usd_annual":300000,"is_top_pay":true},"html_url":"https://alion.io/job/swarm-lead-structures-design-engineer","json_url":"https://alion.io/job/swarm-lead-structures-design-engineer.json","meta":{"generated_at":"2026-10-01T18:55:38Z","cache_seconds":300,"methodology":"https://alion.io/methodology","terms":"https://alion.io/terms","contact":"https://alion.io/contact","api":"https://alion.io/developers","usage":{"tier":"crawler","counted_by":"address","units_charged":1,"used_today":1139,"day_limit":5000,"remaining_today":3861,"minute_limit":60,"resets_at":"2026-10-02T00:00:00Z"}}}
