We engineer cell-specific delivery platforms-including enveloped vectors such as extracellular vesicles and viral vectors-that give cell and gene therapy developers best-in-class, plug-and-play tools spanning discovery through GMP manufacturing.\nFounded in 2022 and based in Evanston and Chicago, Illinois, Syenex operates on an Open Science model: we make a continuously improving catalog of cell-engineering and delivery technologies universally accessible to academia and biopharma, freeing our partners to focus on their therapeutic insight. Through a growing network of partnerships and CDMO integrations, we help developers move from idea to clinical impact faster, at lower cost, and with higher delivery efficiency.\nWe are a small, multidisciplinary team that pairs rigorous synthetic biology with a build-fast, collaborate-openly culture. This role is central to how we scale that science.\nAbout the role\nWe are looking for an accomplished and highly motivated Associate Scientist/Scientist with expertise in mammalian cell engineering to join our Discovery Team. This scientist will help develop and evaluate next-generation delivery vectors and genetic payloads for engineering primary human immune cells. The role will combine general synthetic biology and cell engineering with vector design and quantitative assay development to build technologies that enable efficient packaging and delivery of different biological cargo types. The scientist will work towards both identifying novel vector designs and also building understanding of the principles that underly their function and therapeutic potential.\nThe ideal candidate has substantial hands-on experience with synthetic biology and understands the general principles of gene expression and genetic program design and implementation. The ideal candidate also has substantial experience engineering human immortalized and/or primary cells and has familiarity with techniques for introducing DNA into human cells (transient and/or stable engineering). Experience with engineering viral or non-viral delivery vectors is a plus.\nThe scientist will serve as an independent contributor and scientific problem-solver who can own experimental workstreams end-to-end, from defining the biological question and designing experiments through execution, analysis, interpretation, and recommendation of next steps. They will join a highly collaborative team spanning synthetic biology, molecular biology, immunology, vector engineering, and cell biology.\nCandidates will be considered at the Associate Scientist or Scientist level based on relevant experience.\nWhat you'll do\nDesign, build, and evaluate diverse genetic payloads for mammalian cell engineering, spanning transient gene delivery and stable integration strategies, including targeted and random integration.\nDesign, build, and evaluate gene-editing cargos, including nucleases and other genome-editing enzymes, and optimize their incorporation into engineered delivery systems.\nCharacterize gene and protein expression in mammalian cells using flow cytometry, sequencing, qPCR, ELISA, and imaging techniques\nDevelop scalable and higher-throughput screening workflows to enable evaluation and optimization of large numbers of vector designs\nIndependently design, execute, troubleshoot, and analyze experiments, and use experimental results to recommend subsequent studies\nDevelop, optimize, document, and implement experimental protocols and standard operating procedures to improve reproducibility and support transfer of established workflows\nMaintain complete and accurate experimental records and sample metadata using electronic laboratory notebooks, databases, and sample-tracking systems\nMaintain and expand immortalized and primary human cell cultures\nPerform molecular biology-based cloning and plasmid preparation\nProvide technical guidance to junior scientists and research associates as appropriate\nPresent scientific results to project teams, the broader R&D organization, and company leadership\nQualifications\nRequired\nPhD in cell biology, molecular biology, bioengineering, biomedical engineering, synthetic biology, immunology, or a related discipline; or a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a related field with 4-6 years of relevant laboratory experience in an academic or industry setting.\nHands-on experience culturing and experimentally manipulating mammalian immortalized and primary cells using aseptic cell culture techniques.\nExperience engineering mammalian cells with transient transfection and stable, genomic integration methods.\nExperience with gene editing, including CRISPR/Cas systems, base editing, or targeted gene integration.\nStrong understanding of synthetic biology, including genetic program design.\nExperience with cell characterization techniques including flow cytometry, microscopy, and protein characterization (e.g., ELISA, western blot).\nExperience with molecular biology techniques (e.g. genomic DNA extractions, qPCR, plasmid preparation).\nDemonstrated attention to experimental rigor, data quality, and reproducibility.\nStrong written and verbal scientific communication skills.\nAbility to work effectively both independently and collaboratively across multiple projects.\nHighly motivated with a strong desire to learn and contribute to team science.\nStrong work ethic with attention to detail and data quality.\nPreferred\nRelevant academic or industry research experience.\nExperience with producing, using, and characterizing viral vectors, virus-like particles, extracellular vesicles, or synthetic nanoparticles.\nExperience with molecular (plasmid) design and cloning.\nExperience with mammalian cell plasmid transfection.\nExperience mentoring and training junior scientists in a laboratory environment.\nWhy Join Syenex\nAt Syenex, scientists have the opportunity to work on technically challenging problems at the forefront of cell and gene therapy while having a direct impact on the development of new platform technologies. Our team operates with a high degree of scientific ownership, collaboration, and intellectual curiosity.\nYou will have the opportunity to:\nHelp develop new approaches for engineering human immune cells both ex vivoand in vivo.\nWork across vector design, genome engineering, primary cell biology, and quantitative assay development.\nOwn scientific questions from experimental design through data interpretation, next steps, and product development.\nSee your work rapidly translated from early discovery into platform development and external therapeutic programs.\nWork closely with scientists across disciplines in a collaborative, fast-moving startup environment.","description_format":"text","description_chars":6799,"description_truncated":false,"requirements":{"experience_years_min":4,"management_years_min":null,"team_size_min":null,"manages_managers":false,"education":{"level":"bachelor","optional":false},"security_clearance":false,"languages":[]},"benefits":[],"hiring_locations":[],"hiring_excludes":[],"relocation_offered":false,"industries":["Genomics & Genetic Testing"],"lifecycle":[{"event":"open","at":"2026-10-11T06:48:21Z"}],"visa":[{"country":"US","licensed_sponsor":true,"evidence":"Filed H-1B visas in the last two years","filings_12m":0,"filings_prev_12m":1,"green_card_filings_12m":0,"median_offered_wage_usd":null,"route":null,"cap_exempt":false,"checked_at":"2026-10-29T16:27:21+00:00","sources":["US Department of Labor: LCA disclosure data (H-1B, H-1B1, E-3)"],"filings_for_role_12m":0}],"liveness":{"score":33,"band":"fade","label":"Fading","p_open":1,"p_active":0.605,"p_room":0.55,"age_days":35,"expected_fill_days":28,"reasons":["conf:3","win:tail","comp:junior"],"computed_at":"2026-11-04T06:34:25Z"},"pay":null,"html_url":"https://alion.io/job/syenex-associate-scientistscientist-vector-engineering","json_url":"https://alion.io/job/syenex-associate-scientistscientist-vector-engineering.json","meta":{"generated_at":"2026-11-04T11:48:15Z","cache_seconds":300,"methodology":"https://alion.io/methodology","terms":"https://alion.io/terms","contact":"https://alion.io/contact","api":"https://alion.io/developers","about":"Alion is a live layer of people, companies and AI agents: who they are, whether they are real and active right now, what they do and how to work with them, readable by people and by agents and paid per call.","catalog":"https://alion.io/catalog.json","usage":{"tier":"crawler_verified","counted_by":"address","units_charged":1,"used_today":17692,"day_limit":null,"remaining_today":null,"minute_limit":300,"resets_at":"2026-11-05T00:00:00Z"}},"offers":[{"id":"company.slices","title":"One company in depth, by slice","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002,"plus_per_slice":{"credits":0.05,"usd":0.005}},"unit":"per company, plus each slice with data","note":"the employer in depth","call":{"mcp_tool":"get_company","arguments":{"id":3787119},"rest":"https://alion.io/mcp/rest/get_company?id=3787119"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.slices&for=job%2Fsyenex-associate-scientistscientist-vector-engineering"},{"id":"market.stats","title":"A market slice: pay, demand and time to fill","status":"live","price":{"credits":1,"usd":0.1},"unit":"per slice","note":"pay, demand and time to fill for this role and place","call":{"mcp_tool":"market_stats"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=market.stats&for=job%2Fsyenex-associate-scientistscientist-vector-engineering"},{"id":"job.search","title":"Open jobs by role, technology, place, pay and visa","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002},"unit":"per posting in a list","note":"similar open postings","call":{"mcp_tool":"search_jobs"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=job.search&for=job%2Fsyenex-associate-scientistscientist-vector-engineering"},{"id":"company.verify","title":"Is this company real and active right now","status":"pilot","price":null,"unit":"per company","request":{"url":"https://alion.io/catalog/request","method":"POST","body":"{\"offer\": \"company.verify\", \"for\": \"job/syenex-associate-scientistscientist-vector-engineering\", \"note\": \"what you need it for\"}"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.verify&for=job%2Fsyenex-associate-scientistscientist-vector-engineering"}],"agent":{"mcp":"https://alion.io/mcp/jobs","mcp_open":"https://alion.io/mcp/open","next":[{"tool":"get_job","arguments":{"id":2266783}},{"tool":"search_jobs","arguments":{"company":"syenex.com","detail":"compact"}},{"tool":"match_people","arguments":{"job_id":2266783},"note":"people open to offers who fit this vacancy"}],"note":"The same data through MCP tools: https://alion.io/mcp/open needs no sign-in (compact searches, postings, people); https://alion.io/mcp with an Alion account has everything.
