PDMS typically works across product development, engineering, analysis, design, project management, support and hosting, delivering a wide range of solutions across maritime, manufacturing, skills and public sector in the Isle of Man, UK and globally.\nThe Position\nWe are seeking a Senior Software Developer to join our team. This role requires a highly independent and technically capable professional who can support and maintain business-critical applications, investigate and resolve complex production issues, and work directly with customers when required.\nThe ideal candidate will have strong Linux administration experience, the ability to understand and troubleshoot applications (primarily but not exclusively Ruby based), and the confidence to make sound technical decisions with minimal supervision.\nThe ideal candidate will also have experience of working with a wide range of programming languages and technologies across operating systems and possess the ability to apply solid software engineering, debugging and investigative principles across unfamiliar systems with the ability to learn quickly and deliver results in a fast-moving environment.\nThe role also requires familiarity with modern AI-assisted development, the ability to troubleshoot system workflows, strong analytical skills, and a commitment to quality through automated testing and best practices.\nResponsibilities\nMonitor, troubleshoot, and resolve application, infrastructure, and production-related issues.\nInvestigate application behavior by reviewing and stepping through Ruby code to identify root causes and potential defects.\nPerform production support activities, including data analysis, validation, and carry out authorized, controlled data updates in line with agreed procedures.\nWork directly with customers to understand issues, provide technical guidance, and communicate resolutions effectively.\nTake ownership of incidents and drive them through to resolution with minimal supervision.\nMake informed technical and operational decisions while balancing business impact, risk, and urgency.\nCollaborate with development teams to identify recurring issues and implement long-term solutions.\nLeverage AI-powered tools and workflows to improve troubleshooting, analysis, productivity, and operational efficiency.\nContribute to improving code quality, operational processes, documentation, and system reliability.\nDevelop, maintain, and improve clear technical and operational documentation to support effective knowledge sharing, troubleshooting, and ongoing system support.\nSupport and advocate for automated testing practices, including validation of fixes and regression prevention.\nParticipate in system maintenance, deployments, upgrades, and operational improvement initiatives.\nAssist in establishing and improving production support, monitoring, and data governance practices.\nTechnical Skills\n5+ years of experience in application support, software engineering, technical operations, or a related role.\nStrong hands-on experience working in Linux environments.\nAbility to read, understand, and troubleshoot Ruby applications, even if Ruby is not the candidate's primary development language.\nExperience diagnosing complex application and production issues across multiple system layers.\nProven ability to work independently and manage priorities with minimal guidance.\nStrong customer-facing communication and stakeholder management skills.\nExperience handling production support responsibilities in business-critical environments.\nComfortable using AI-assisted tools and workflows for development, troubleshooting, documentation, and productivity improvements.\nStrong understanding of software quality principles and automated testing best practices.\nExperience working with databases and executing data analysis and controlled data updates.\nExcellent problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making abilities.\nRole Requirements\nStrong communication and collaboration skills.\nAbility to work independently and in a team-oriented environment.\nExperience working in enterprise or product-based environments is preferred.\nOpportunities\nPlay a key role in shaping the technical direction and development of key systems that have a wide-ranging positive global impact on Maritime Safety and Regulatory Compliance.\nHelp shape the future of AI assisted development techniques to accelerate delivery of innovative solutions to our clients while working day-to-day in a visible, fast-moving environment where technical judgement and practical delivery matter.
