The successful candidate will independently develop and improve forecasting models from data exploration and feature engineering through validation, deployment, monitoring, and ongoing optimization.\nA key responsibility will be evaluating and optimizing the use of weather and Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) providers. The candidate will compare provider accuracy, available variables, forecast horizons, geographic coverage, latency, reliability, and overlap between services to determine the most effective weather inputs for each forecasting application. This includes identifying where individual providers or weather features perform better under specific conditions and identifying opportunities to reduce unnecessary provider redundancy while maintaining forecast accuracy and resiliency.\nThe ideal candidate combines strong statistical and machine-learning skills with practical understanding of the meteorological, physical, and operational factors affecting renewable generation and electric demand.\nKey Responsibilities\nForecasting & Model Development\nDevelop and enhance Wind, Solar, and Load forecasting models from research and backtesting through production implementation.\nBuild forecasting approaches using combinations of:Weather and NWP forecasts\nHistorical generation and load\nSCADA and operational telemetry\nPersistence and statistical baselines\nPhysical relationships\nGradient boosting and other machine-learning techniques\nEnsemble and probabilistic forecasting methods\n\nPerform feature engineering, model selection, optimization, and validation.\nDevelop backtesting and benchmarking processes to evaluate forecast performance across sites, horizons, seasons, and operating conditions.\nInvestigate forecast errors and determine whether they originate from weather, model behavior, data quality, or operational conditions.\nImprove existing and legacy forecasting models while identifying opportunities to simplify and modernize model architecture.\nWeather Provider Analytics & Optimization\nAnalyze multiple weather and NWP providers for accuracy, reliability, coverage, latency, available variables, forecast horizon, and operational value.\nCompare provider performance by:Location/site\nForecast horizon\nWeather variable\nSeason\nWeather regime or event type\n\nIdentify the relative strengths and weaknesses of individual weather providers and determine where specific providers or variables may provide superior forecasting value.\nAssess redundancy and overlap across weather services and support recommendations for an efficient core set of providers.\nDevelop and evaluate approaches for:Weather-provider blending and ensembles\nProvider weighting and selection\nBias correction\nFeature selection\nProvider fallback and substitution\n\nEnsure correct alignment of weather forecast issue times, valid times, time zones, spatial resolution, measurement units, and forecast horizons.\nMonitor weather-data quality and identify provider anomalies or degradation that could impact production forecasts.\nEnergy Forecasting Domain Knowledge\nApply relevant physical, meteorological, and operational knowledge across forecasting applications.\nWind\nWind speed and direction\nHub-height adjustments\nVertical wind shear\nTemperature, pressure, humidity, and air density\nTurbine power curves\nCut-in, rated, and cut-out behavior\nWake and site effects\nSCADA and generation telemetry\nCurtailment, derates, outages, maintenance, and equipment availability\nSolar\nIrradiance and cloud conditions\nAmbient and module temperature\nInverter performance and availability\nTracker position and stowing\nPPC/plant-controller impacts\nCurtailment\nEquipment outages\nSoiling and degradation\nMaintenance\nSite capability versus nameplate capacity\nSCADA and plant telemetry\nLoad\nTemperature, humidity, heat index, and other weather drivers\nCalendar and seasonal patterns\nLagged demand and weather relationships\nExtreme-weather behavior\nRegional and customer-segment differences\nPeak-demand forecasting\nThe candidate should understand that observed generation and demand can be influenced by operational conditions in addition to weather and account for these factors when developing, training, and evaluating forecasting models.\nRequired Skills & Experience\nAdvanced proficiency in Python and common data-science libraries such as pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn, statsmodels, LightGBM, XGBoost, or equivalent tools.\nDemonstrated experience developing and deploying forecasting, time-series, or predictive models.\nStrong knowledge of:Feature engineering\nRegression and time-series methods\nGradient boosting\nEnsemble forecasting\nProbabilistic or quantile forecasting\nModel validation and backtesting\n\nExperience integrating and analyzing weather APIs, NWP forecasts, SCADA/telemetry, databases, and external data feeds.\nAbility to evaluate weather-provider performance and determine its impact on forecast accuracy.\nStrong SQL and data-analysis skills.\nExperience transitioning models from research and development into reliable production workflows.\nWorking knowledge of AWS services such as EC2, S3, Lambda, ECS, Step Functions, CloudWatch, and SageMaker, or comparable cloud technologies.\nExperience with Git, version control, testing, and reproducible software-development practices.\nStrong troubleshooting, analytical, communication, and documentation skills.\nAbility to work independently while collaborating effectively with data scientists, data engineers, DevOps, operations, trading, and business stakeholders.\nModel Performance & Production Support\nMonitor forecast performance using metrics such as MAE, RMSE, normalized error, bias, forecast skill, and probabilistic metrics where appropriate.\nBenchmark internal forecasts against persistence, existing models, alternative weather providers, and third-party forecasts.\nDevelop monitoring and diagnostics for:Forecast degradation\nData-quality issues\nWeather-provider outages or anomalies\nModel drift\nOperational impacts\n\nImplement appropriate logging, alerts, error handling, and recovery procedures.\nSupport forecasting solutions designed to continue operating when individual data feeds or weather services become unavailable.\nPerform root-cause analysis of significant forecast misses and recommend corrective actions.\nProduction & Data Integration\nDevelop data connectors and pipelines supporting weather, telemetry, historical generation, load, and operational data.\nSupport scalable batch and near-real-time forecasting workflows.\nMaintain clear model configuration, versioning, dependencies, and documentation.\nCollaborate with data engineering and DevOps teams to deploy and maintain forecasting applications.\nBuild dashboards and analytical tools using Streamlit, Plotly, or similar technologies to communicate forecast performance, model behavior, and operational impacts.\nPreferred Experience\nExperience with utility-scale wind forecasting or renewable generation modeling.\nExperience with multiple commercial or public weather/NWP providers.\nExperience working directly with wind-turbine, solar-plant, or SCADA telemetry.\nExperience with turbine power curves and weather-to-power conversion methodologies.\nExperience benchmarking internal forecasts against commercial forecasting vendors.\nFamiliarity with energy markets, utility operations, generation scheduling, trading, or ISO/RTO environments.\nExperience developing forecasts across intra-hour, day-ahead, and multi-day horizons.\nExperience with probabilistic forecasting and forecast uncertainty.\nExperience supporting or mentoring less-experienced data scientists.\nThe pay range
