Telstra is Australia's largest telecommunications company, tracing its origins to the 1975 creation of Telecom Australia out of the national postal service and privatised in stages between 1997 and 2006. It operates the country's most extensive mobile network, with coverage across a continent where population density makes rural service economically difficult, alongside broadband retail over the government-owned national broadband network. The group has restructured into separate infrastructure, consumer and international businesses, owns subsea cable capacity across Asia through Telstra International, and has built substantial positions in health technology and enterprise cloud services.
