The platform enables industrial operators to shift energy use over time by sourcing power when it is most cost-effective and enables the electrification of high-temperature industrial heat at a cost advantage to using fossil fuels. By storing electricity thermochemically, the system delivers a continuous stream of combustion-free, high-temperature air at up to 1,200°C.\nTempo is backed by leading climate and energy investors, including Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Khosla Ventures, and Prelude Ventures.\nFor more information, visit www.tempoenergy.com.\nJob Description\nTempo is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Engineering Technician with strong welding capabilities to produce engineered parts and assemble testing apparatus, instruments, sensors, prototypes, and power electronic components. The ideal candidate is a driven professional who has recently graduated from a strong technical program, has 2-4 years of hands-on experience, and is eager to bring their energy and foundational skills to a fast-paced startup environment. You will work both independently and collaboratively to bring our engineering designs to life. This role is integral to the development and refinement of high-temperature energy storage components, offering an incredible opportunity to work on complex R&D projects and grow your career at the cutting edge of thermochemical energy storage technology.\nKey Responsibilities\nInterpret 3D CAD models, 2D drawings, and spec charts to plan and execute part manufacturing; measure, mark, and cut raw materials accordingly\nPerform TIG/MIG welding on structural assemblies and operate machine shop equipment (mills, lathes, drill presses, band saws) to create or modify parts\nAssist in assembling complex mechanical and electromechanical systems as required\nPrepare finished components for dimensional accuracy, weld integrity, and defects for inspection\nModify and repair parts, prototypes, and test rigs to support agile R&D needs using welding, grinding, cutting, and machining techniques\nWork with high-temperature and specialty materials (refractory metals, ceramics, alloys) to meet durability and performance requirements for thermochemical applications\nPartner with engineers to interpret technical drawings, troubleshoot fabrication challenges, and recommend design improvements for manufacturability\nInspect fabricated and welded components for structural integrity, finish, and dimensional accuracy to ensure parts meet required tolerances\nMaintain welding gear and machine tools in optimal working condition; follow all safety protocols when welding, handling high-temperature materials, and operating machinery\nRecord prototype builds, assembly procedures, fabrication parameters, and component modifications, providing real-time feedback to engineering and R&D teams\n\nQualifications\nRequired:\nAssociate degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, formal welding certification, or completion of a technical/trade school program\n2-4 years of hands-on experience in mechanical fabrication, welding, and assembly; experience in an R&D or startup environment a plus\nProficiency in TIG and MIG welding on various metals\nExceptional safety acumen and commitment to safe work practices\nFamiliarity with manual mills, lathes, grinders, and general metalworking tools\nAbility to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications\nStrong willingness to learn about high-temperature and specialty materials (ceramics, alloys, refractory metals) \nExceptional attention to detail with the ability to work to tight tolerances\nProactive learner with the ability to assist in troubleshooting basic fabrication challenges.\nClear communicator able to collaborate effectively with engineers and team members in a fast-paced R&D environment\nGenuine interest in learning and growing within an R&D or startup environment; comfortable wearing multiple hats to get the job done\nPreferred:\nExperience in high-temperature applications, thermal systems, or energy storage\nKnowledge of materials science, particularly around fabrication and welding of heat-resistant materials\nFamiliarity with safety standards and best practices in fabrication and high-temperature R&D settings\n\nCompensation Range\nThe US base hourly salary range for this full-time position is $24.27 to $30.76 + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, location, and relevant education or training. \nPlease note that the compensation details listed in US role postings reflect the base salary only, and do not include equity or benefits.\nPhysical Demands\nSitting and standing: Extended periods at a desk performing computer-based design, simulation, and documentation work.\nLifting and carrying : Lift and carry equipment up to 50 lbs.; heavier items handled with mechanical assistance or team lift\n Travel: Occasional travel (estimated <5%) \nWorking at Tempo\nTempo is a lean organization working on exciting challenges, and the people who thrive here share a few things in common beyond their technical skills.\nClear, direct communication: You professionally say what you mean, lead with empathy, use tact, ask when you're unsure, and keep the people around you informed without being asked. At a company our size, communication gaps are expensive, and good communicators add to success and efficiency!\nLow-ego helpfulness: You're willing to jump in on work that isn't strictly yours, whether that's helping a teammate debug something, lending a hand in the shop, or flagging an issue you noticed outside your lane. No one here succeeds in a silo.\nIntellectual curiosity: You're genuinely interested in how things work, not just your piece of it, but the broader system. Tempo sits at the intersection of chemistry, mechanical engineering, power electronics, and software; the more you understand about the whole, the more valuable you become.\nBusiness awareness: You understand that your work exists in a business context. You think about cost, timeline, and tradeoffs-not just technical elegance-and you make decisions accordingly.\nComfort with ambiguity: Processes here are still being built. You can make progress without a perfect playbook, and you know when to ask for direction versus when to use your judgment and move forward.\n Accountability: You own your outcomes, including the misses. When something goes sideways, the instinct here is to fix it and learn from it, not to explain why it wasn't your fault. \n\nThis job description is intended to provide a general overview of the position and is not an exhaustive list of duties, responsibilities, or qualifications. Tempo reserves the right to modify, add, or remove responsibilities as business needs evolve.
