This team builds and maintains the core Temporal server. Its scope is broad, including Matching, Applications, Foundations, task processing, quotas and throttling, visibility, developer-facing primitives such as standalone activities, schedules, and streaming, and workflow experience improvements such as Continue-As-New, pause, and reset. We do not expect one person to cover all of these areas. We’re looking for an engineer who is excited to learn the system, contribute to new and/or ambiguous projects across the codebase, and help improve the reliability, performance, operability, and developer experience of Temporal over time. This is a hands-on engineering role where you’ll collaborate with experienced engineers to design, build, and operate components of Temporal’s distributed systems platform while growing your skills in distributed systems engineering.\nWhat You'll Do\nDesign, implement, test, and ship well-scoped features and improvements for the Temporal server with support from teammates.\nWork on distributed systems problems in areas such as task matching, scheduling, workflow execution, visibility, quotas, throttling, persistence, developer primitives, and workflow lifecycle features.\nMake thoughtful engineering tradeoffs with guidance, balancing developer experience, performance, and operability requirements.\nPartner with engineers, product managers, cloud teams, and customer-facing teams to understand requirements and deliver scalable solutions.\nImprove the reliability and operability of the server by adding tests, instrumentation, dashboards, alerts, runbooks, and documentation.\nParticipate in design discussions and code reviews to learn best practices and contribute to a high-quality codebase.\nContribute to improving the developer experience for open source users and enterprise customers through incremental improvements and bug fixes.\nShare knowledge with teammates and contribute to a collaborative engineering culture.\nWhat You'll Bring\nExperience building and operating production backend systems (distributed systems experience and concurrency experience).\nStrong computer science fundamentals, including concurrency basics, data structures, and debugging.\nExperience writing production-quality code in Go, Java, or another applicable backend language, with an emphasis on correctness and maintainability.\nFamiliarity with core distributed systems concepts (e.g., fault tolerance, consistency tradeoffs, replication, scheduling, performance), with interest in deepening these skills.\nAbility to break down ambiguous problems into smaller tasks, ask good questions, and incorporate feedback from code review.\nComfort working collaboratively across teams and communicating progress, risks, and tradeoffs clearly.\nExperience with testing practices and an operational mindset (logging, metrics, tracing, on-call empathy) is a plus.\nExperience with open source software or communities is a plus.\nExperience with AWS, Azure, or GCP is a plus.\nExposure to technologies such as Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, ClickHouse, Cassandra, PostgreSQL, or MySQL is a plus.\nExposure to Kubernetes or related tooling (CRDs, KEDA, Argo) is a plus.\nWhat Makes You a Good Fit\nYou’re excited to continue building and deepening your distributed systems expertise.\nYou enjoy learning large, complex codebases, think critically, thrive in ambiguity, and enjoy solving challenging problems.\nYou take ownership of your work, follow through, and collaborate well with teammates.\nYou balance technical depth with practical engineering decisions and are comfortable iterating toward better solutions.\nYou don’t need prior Temporal experience-you’re excited to work on the core of a distributed system used by a large open source community and enterprise customers.\nTemporal Technologies is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Temporal Technologies does not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, non-disqualifying physical or mental disability, national origin, veteran status, or any other basis covered by appropriate law. All employment is decided on the basis of qualifications, merit, and business need. We embrace and celebrate differences and diversity.\nTemporal is committed to providing access, equal opportunity, and reasonable accommodation for individuals with disabilities in employment, its services, programs, and activities. If you need to request a reasonable accommodation, please let your Recruiter know so we can assist.","description_format":"text","description_chars":4605,"description_truncated":false,"requirements":{"experience_years_min":null,"management_years_min":null,"team_size_min":null,"manages_managers":false,"education":null,"security_clearance":false,"languages":[]},"benefits":[],"hiring_locations":[{"name":"United States","iso":"US","kind":"country"},{"name":"San Francisco","iso":null,"kind":"city"},{"name":"Seattle","iso":null,"kind":"city"}],"hiring_excludes":[],"relocation_offered":false,"industries":["Developer Tools"],"lifecycle":[{"event":"open","at":"2026-09-30T23:51:50Z"}],"liveness":{"score":63,"band":"ok","label":"Likely open","p_open":1,"p_active":0.632,"p_room":1,"age_days":2,"expected_fill_days":50,"reasons":["conf:4","stale_co","velocity","win:early"],"computed_at":"2026-10-02T05:45:00Z"},"pay":{"stated_usd_annual":194250,"is_top_pay":true},"html_url":"https://alion.io/job/temporal-software-engineer-ii-open-source-server","json_url":"https://alion.io/job/temporal-software-engineer-ii-open-source-server.json","meta":{"generated_at":"2026-10-03T00:37:22Z","cache_seconds":300,"methodology":"https://alion.io/methodology","terms":"https://alion.io/terms","contact":"https://alion.io/contact","api":"https://alion.io/developers","usage":{"tier":"crawler","counted_by":"address","units_charged":1,"used_today":229,"day_limit":5000,"remaining_today":4771,"minute_limit":60,"resets_at":"2026-10-04T00:00:00Z"}}}
