If you're ready to join the TSTC family and make great memories please complete our application process.\nJob Description\nThe Police Sergeant serves as a first-line supervisor within the TSTC Police Department and reports to a Police Lieutenant. This position is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day activities of Police Officers and department personnel, ensuring effective law enforcement services and compliance with institutional policy and state and federal regulations. The Sergeant provides leadership in response to incidents, supervises investigations, and supports departmental operations. This role is a designated Campus Security Authority (CSA) under the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act).Hiring Range is $36.37 - $41.82 USD Hourly.\nThe final salary offer will be determined based on the candidate's qualifications and experience.\nEquivalent combination of education, training and relevant professional experience will be considered.\nEssential Functions\nThe employee will demonstrate TSTC’s Core Values of Excellence, Accountability, Service, and Integrity with internal and external stakeholders, customers, students, and community members.\nTeam Supervision and Leadership\nSupervise and evaluate the performance of Police Officers and staff. Manage schedules, authorize overtime, provide training, assign tasks, and set quality standards. Address performance concerns and recommend personnel actions including promotions and disciplinary measures.\nOperations Oversight and Field Response\nOversee patrol functions and criminal law enforcement activities. Respond to and supervise emergency scenes, criminal investigations, traffic incidents, and disturbances. Support officers in handling complex or sensitive incidents.\nInvestigations and Reporting\nParticipate in investigations, including interviewing witnesses and suspects, processing scenes, and gathering evidence. Ensure accuracy in incident documentation and the timely completion of official records and reports.\nPolicy Enforcement and Compliance\nInterpret and apply departmental policies and procedures in routine and non-routine situations. Ensure adherence to local, state, and federal laws, and departmental protocols. Promote safety, professionalism, and legal compliance.\nInteragency and Community Collaboration\nCoordinate with area law enforcement and emergency response agencies. Serve as a liaison for external support and interdepartmental cooperation during incidents or planned activities.\nAdministrative Duties and Readiness\nRecommend resources and equipment needs. Monitor and maintain readiness of staff, equipment, and patrol coverage. Perform duties from subordinate position descriptions when needed.\nEducation & Experience\nMinimum Qualifications\nCurrent Peace Officer License from TCOLE\nCompletion of Basic Instructor Proficiency Course within one year of appointment\nField Training Officer (FTO) Course completed or obtained within six months of appointment\nFive years of concurrent patrol experience\nKnowledge of federal, state, and local laws applicable to the role\nSkilled in the use of firearms, patrol vehicles, and standard police equipment\nProficient with computer systems used in law enforcement operations\nAbility to gather evidence, lead investigations, and deliver testimony\nDemonstrated leadership, organizational, and supervisory skills\nSuccessful completion of psychological evaluation, physical exam, and full background investigation\nCompletion of Clery Act CSA training within three months of appointment\nPreferred\nMinimum of 10 years of total police experience, with five years in a college or university setting preferred\nFive years of concurrent TSTC patrol experience\nMaster Peace Officer certification preferred\nSkills & Abilities\nLeadership and Team Development\nDemonstrates the ability to guide, mentor, and evaluate officers while fostering a culture of accountability, professionalism, and continuous improvement.\nOperational Decision Making\nApplies sound judgment in high-pressure or rapidly evolving situations, ensuring safe, lawful, and effective responses to incidents and patrol operations.\nInvestigative Proficiency\nPossesses strong skills in conducting interviews, gathering evidence, documenting incidents, and ensuring accuracy and integrity in official reports.\nPolicy and Legal Compliance\nInterprets and enforces departmental policies and all applicable laws, promoting consistent adherence to procedures and supporting ethical, compliant policing.\nCommunity and Interagency Relations\nBuilds productive relationships with community members, campus stakeholders, and external agencies to enhance communication, cooperation, and coordinated response efforts.\nCore Competencies\nLeadership and Team Management\nGuides, evaluates, and motivates police staff.
