We are looking for a Research and Development Engineer - CEMA join our highly experienced research team within Thales Research & Technology (TRT). This is an exciting opportunity to develop rapid proof-of-concept demonstrators, explore emerging technologies and contribute to innovative research projects that support future defence and security capabilities. Working within a collaborative team of experienced researchers, you'll have the freedom to be creative, experiment with new ideas and help shape technologies from concept through to prototype.

Working across a variety of cutting-edge projects, you'll combine hands-on software development with research, rapid prototyping and technology exploration. Main Responsibilities
- Invent and explore new concepts and technologies, and demonstrate their applicability to Thales and future defence and security capabilities.
- Identify opportunities to build on and expand existing capabilities to address new and emerging technical challenges.
- Develop proof-of-concept demonstrators to explore, evaluate and communicate innovative concepts and technologies.
- Carry out feasibility studies through analysis, rapid prototyping, experimentation and trials to assess the potential of new approaches.
- Work effectively within a team, while being self-motivated to take ownership of individual research activities, and remain flexible and adaptable to new research areas, technical challenges and ways of working.
Ideal Experience & Skills
- Experience with RF applications, such as electromagnetic spectrum sensing, Electronic Countermeasures (ECM), Electronic Warfare (EW) and Software Defined Radio (SDR).
- Ability to generate, develop and clearly describe innovative approaches to user and technical challenges, with a creative and problem-solving mindset and the ability to translate ideas into practical solutions.
- Versatile software development skills, ideally with experience across multiple programming languages. Python and C are essential, with experience in C#, C++ or Rust desirable.
- Experience configuring and/or developing software for embedded platforms or single-board computers, either industrial or consumer electronics. Experience with Arduino, Raspberry Pi, BeagleBone, STM32, RTOS, device drivers and peripherals would be desirable.
- Practical experience with rapid hands-on prototyping, including skills such as soldering, 3D printing, debugging and fault-finding.
- A creative, innovative and adaptable approach to research and engineering, with the ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a small, multidisciplinary team.

Security Clearance Requirement (UK Eyes Only)
Due to the nature of the work that we do at Thales, many of our roles are subject to security restrictions. This role requires you to be a UK National and achieve Security Clearance (SC) without any caveats. It would be advantageous if currently held; however, if not currently held, the successful applicant must undergo, achieve and maintain SC Clearance prior to commencing employment. If approved by the MOD, a dual national from a non-ITAR country may be considered.
To be eligible for full SC, you generally need to have resided in the UK for the last 5 years. In some circumstances, a minimum of 3 years' residence in the UK over the last 5 years may be accepted, with additional overseas checks.
