The role entails delivering robust and reliable electronic systems for data handling, communications, and control across all mission phases.\nThe engineer will contribute to system architecture definition, interface management, verification activities, and requirements engineering, while working closely with multidisciplinary teams and external stakeholders. In this role, you will be focused on the Flight Computing system of the spacecraft, but you might also be assigned to different avionics systems.\nKey Responsibilities\nSystem Design & Architecture\nDefine and develop avionics system architectures, including electronics, data handling, and communication functions.\n\nEnsure end-to-end consistency of data flows, interfaces, and system-level requirements.\n\nContribute to spacecraft-level trade-offs between performance, reliability, mass, power, and cost.\n\nDefine computing requirements for processing capability, memory, storage, timing, synchronization, boot and initialization, and operational modes.\n\nDevelop architectural concepts for fault detection, isolation, and recovery (FDIR), fault containment, redundancy management, and autonomous spacecraft operations.\n\nDevelop network topology, interface control documents (ICDs), data flow diagrams, communication matrices, and interface specifications.\n\nCommunications & Data Handling\nDefine onboard and ground-related communication and data handling concepts.\n\nSupport implementation of telemetry, telecommand, and data distribution architectures.\n\nEnsure reliable data acquisition, processing, storage, and transmission under mission constraints.\n\nContribute to bandwidth, timing, and data budget analyses.\n\nIntegration & Interface Management\nDefine and manage interfaces between avionics and other spacecraft subsystems (power, propulsion, GNC, payload, etc.).\n\nEnsure compatibility between spacecraft, launch vehicle, and ground segment interfaces.\n\nCoordinate interface definitions with internal teams, suppliers, and external stakeholders.\n\nExternal Regulatory & Certification Leadership\nStrong ability to technically present, defend, and substantiate avionics subsystem designs and verification evidence with external regulatory and certification authorities, including NASA, ESA, and other government agencies, supporting spacecraft qualification, safety, and flight certification.\nVerification & Validation\nDefine and support verification and validation strategies for avionics systems.\n\nParticipate in simulation, hardware-in-the-loop (HIL), and system-level testing activities.\n\nAnalyze test results, identify anomalies, and drive corrective actions.\n\nEnsure compliance with system performance and reliability requirements.\n\nRequirements Engineering\nCapture, analyze, and manage system and subsystem requirements.\n\nEnsure full traceability from mission objectives to implementation and validation.\n\nContribute to system documentation, including specifications, interface control documents, and test plans.\n\nEnsure compliance with applicable space standards and engineering best practices.\n\nCross-functional Collaboration\nWork closely with software, hardware, systems, operations, and mission engineering teams.\n\nParticipate in design reviews, technical exchanges, and system trade-off discussions.\n\nSupport alignment with external partners, suppliers, and customers.\n\nContribute to integration campaigns, launch preparation, and mission operations support.\n\nRequired Qualifications\nDegree in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering, or equivalent.\n\n5+ years experience in avionics systems, electronics, embedded systems, or spacecraft engineering.\n\nStrong understanding of:\nElectronic and embedded system architectures\n\nCommunication and data handling principles\n\nSystem integration and interface management\n\nExperience with requirements engineering and system lifecycle development.\n\nKnowledge of verification and validation methods, including testing and simulation.\n\nStrong analytical and problem-solving skills.\n\nAbility to work in multidisciplinary engineering environments.\n\nPreferred Qualifications\nExperience in spacecraft avionics or aerospace systems.\n\nFamiliarity with space communication and data standards (e.g., CCSDS).\n\nExperience with HIL testing, simulation environments, or digital engineering tools.\n\nExposure to safety-critical or mission-critical system development.\n\nExperience working in international or multi-stakeholder engineering teams.\n\nWhy you should join us!\nWhat makes us special here at The Exploration Company and why we think you will enjoy working here is:\nWe’re Agile - we make decisions fast whilst keeping our goals and systems in mind\n\nWe’re Open and Collaborative - we are transparent about risks and obstacles, so that we can cooperate to overcome them\n\nWe have a lot of Fun - we refuel our energy knowing we are democratising space. It’s a wonderful and rare opportunity, are YOU up for the challenge?\n\nWe'd love to hear from you if you wish to be a part of our journey.
