The Home Depot is an American home improvement retailer founded in 1978 whose founders set out to build warehouse-format stores stocking far more than traditional hardware shops could hold. It operates more than two thousand stores across the United States, Canada and Mexico, selling building materials, tools, appliances, garden supplies and decor to consumers while deriving a large and growing share of sales from professional contractors served through dedicated sales teams and distribution centres. Headquartered in Atlanta and a component of the Dow Jones Industrial Average, it acquired the building products distributor SRS in 2024 to deepen its position with professional customers.

With a career at The Home Depot, you can be yourself and also be part of something bigger.

Position Summary

The Engineering Technician is a hands-on member of the engineering team supporting the development, build, testing, deployment, and improvement of the company’s automation products and systems.

Working with mechanical, electrical, software, systems, manufacturing, and realization teams, the technician helps turn designs into robust, field-ready products. This includes building and evaluating prototypes, supporting testing and troubleshooting, and providing practical feedback on manufacturability, assembly, installation, serviceability, and maintainability.

The ideal candidate is mechanically inclined, technically curious, organized, and comfortable using hands-on judgment to identify problems and improve products and processes.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering & Prototype Support - 40%

  • Build, assemble, modify, and evaluate prototype automation equipment and assemblies.
  • Support the transition from engineering designs and CAD models to functional hardware.
  • Identify issues during assembly, integration, testing, and early product builds.
  • Provide practical feedback on manufacturability, assembly sequence, installation, serviceability, tool access, cable routing, hardware selection, and component accessibility.
  • Recommend design and process improvements based on hands-on experience.
  • Support mechanical and electromechanical assembly, adjustment, alignment, and system integration.
  • Assist with design iterations, prototype builds, NPI, and early production activities.
  • Coordinate periodically with outside suppliers and technical partners to support prototype builds, fixtures, components, and other engineering needs.
  • Support contract manufacturing activities, including first-article builds, build issue resolution, and verification of drawings, work instructions, test procedures, and manufacturing processes.

Testing & Troubleshooting - 30%

  • Perform hands-on testing of products, assemblies, components, and subsystems.
  • Set up equipment, fixtures, and instrumentation for engineering evaluations.
  • Execute functional, validation, endurance, burn-in, and reliability testing.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, controls, and system-level issues.
  • Reproduce product and field failures to support root-cause investigations.
  • Use technical judgment to identify unexpected behavior requiring further investigation.
  • Verify engineering changes and corrective actions through structured testing.
  • Clearly document test setups, results, failures, and observations.

Product Support, Documentation & Training - 20%

  • Serve as a hands-on subject matter expert for the installation, deployment, operation, and maintenance of fielded products.
  • Train and support external technicians, partners, and other resources responsible for equipment at customer sites.
  • Support documentation of product designs, build configurations, test setups, and engineering changes.
  • Develop and update assembly instructions, test procedures, troubleshooting guides, service procedures, and installation instructions.
  • Capture photographs, measurements, diagrams, and technical information needed to document products accurately.
  • Validate documentation by performing the procedures and identifying missing or unclear information.
  • Support product demonstrations and hands-on technical training as needed.

Lab & Equipment Support - 10%

  • Maintain an organized, safe, and effective engineering lab.
  • Organize and maintain tools, test equipment, prototype hardware, fixtures, and commonly used components.
  • Maintain spare parts inventory
  • Coordinate with engineering and sourcing teams to obtain parts and equipment required for builds and testing.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree, technical certification, apprenticeship, or equivalent practical experience in engineering technology, electromechanical systems, robotics, manufacturing, industrial automation, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in an engineering lab, prototype environment, automation company, equipment manufacturer, field service role, or similar technical position preferred.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to build, modify, troubleshoot, and repair mechanical and electromechanical equipment.
  • Comfortable using hand tools, power tools, measurement equipment, wiring, sensors, fasteners, and industrial hardware.
  • Ability to read engineering drawings, assembly drawings, bills of material, schematics, and technical specifications.
  • Ability to evaluate designs from an assembly, manufacturing, installation, maintenance, and service perspective.
  • Experience performing structured testing, troubleshooting equipment, and documenting technical results.
  • Strong practical problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills.

Preferred Characteristics

The successful candidate will:

  • Enjoy building equipment and understanding how engineering designs perform in the real world.
  • Naturally look for ways to make products easier to build, install, maintain, and repair.
  • Be comfortable providing practical feedback to engineers.
  • Notice poor fits, difficult assembly sequences, inaccessible hardware, awkward cable routing, and other design issues.
  • Be comfortable assembling, modifying, disassembling, testing, and troubleshooting complex equipment.
  • Be capable of becoming a go-to technical resource for how the product is built, deployed, and maintained.
  • Communicate effectively with engineers, technicians, suppliers, manufacturing partners, and field personnel.
  • Take ownership of assigned builds, tests, and technical issues through resolution.
  • Work well in a fast-moving environment where priorities shift between prototype development, testing, production support, and field activities.

Travel & Work Schedule

The position will primarily support engineering development, prototype builds, and testing at the company facility.

Periodic travel to customer sites, suppliers, manufacturing partners, and project locations may be required to support builds, installation, training, troubleshooting, and product evaluation.

Occasional non-standard working hours may be required to support testing, installations, deployments, or critical engineering activities.
