This position will have a particular focus on mechanical systems and prototyping, including mechanical fabrication and assembly; drawings, schematics, and bills of material; machining, welding, sheet metal, and 3D printing; pneumatic and electromechanical systems; material-handling and ergonomic equipment; field installation and modification; prototype troubleshooting; and as-built documentation and equipment maintenance. The role will assist the Controls/Automation Engineer and Mechanical Engineer in the design, assembly, testing, and maintenance of automated and mechanical systems.\nThe ideal candidate will have a strong technical aptitude, experience working in industrial or laboratory environments, and a proactive approach to supporting engineering projects that improve efficiency, reduce ergonomic risks, and enhance operational capabilities.\nThe salary range is $25.34 - $36.75. Salary will be determined based on qualifications and experience.\nKey Responsibilities (What you bring):\nAssist with assembly, installation, testing, and modification of mechanical and automation systems.\nPerform routine equipment maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs.\nSupport mechanical fabrication, prototype assembly, and field installation.\nRead and work from drawings, schematics, and bills of material.\nMaintain records of work performed, test results, and system modifications.\nManage tools, parts, materials, and engineering project inventory.\nCollaborate with engineers on prototypes and system integration.\nParticipate in cross-functional projects across JMCRS and Research Services.\nProvide feedback on equipment performance and improvement opportunities.\nSupport equipment documentation, training, maintenance, and validation activities.\nFollow institutional safety protocols and safe work practices.\n\nMinimum Qualifications:\nHigh School Diploma or GED\n2 years of experience in a technical, mechanical, or industrial support role.\nStrong mechanical aptitude and familiarity with hand and power tools.\nAbility to follow technical instructions and engineering drawings.\nBasic understanding of mechanical and electrical systems.\nGood organizational and communication skills.\nWillingness to learn and adapt in a dynamic environment.\nFamiliarity with automation components (e.g., sensors, actuators, conveyors).\nUnderstanding of safety and ergonomic principles in equipment design.\nExposure to Lean or Six Sigma practices.\nAbility to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.\nHands-on experience with tools, equipment, and mechanical assembly.\nAbility to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and instructions.\nPreferred Qualifications:\nAssociate's degree in mechanical engineering technology, manufacturing technology, industrial technology, welding, machining, or a related technical field.\n3+ years of experience in mechanical fabrication, equipment assembly, prototype development, industrial maintenance, or engineering support.\nHands-on experience with machining, welding, sheet metal fabrication, 3D printing, or related shop processes.\nExperience working with pneumatic, electromechanical, material-handling, or ergonomic equipment and systems.\nExperience with CAD software, engineering drawings, bills of material, and as-built equipment documentation.\nOSHA 10 or 30 certification, forklift or equipment-operation certification, or technical certification in mechanical assembly, welding, machining, or industrial maintenance.\nAbout JAX:\nThe Jackson Laboratory is an independent, nonprofit biomedical research institution with a National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center and nearly 3,000 employees in locations across the United States (Maine, Connecticut, California, New York, Florida), Japan and China.
