Reporting directly to the Board of Directors under a Policy Governance model, the General Manager works closely with a talented leadership team to ensure the cooperative remains financially strong, mission-driven, and deeply connected to the community it serves.\nKey Responsibilities\nStrategic Leadership & Governance\nLead the organization in support of The Merc's mission, Ends Policies, and strategic goals.\nPartner with the Board of Directors to support long-term organizational success.\nProvide regular updates regarding organizational performance, opportunities, and risks.\nGuide strategic initiatives and organizational planning efforts.\nFinancial & Business Leadership\nOversee annual budgets, financial performance, and long-term sustainability.\nMonitor sales, labor, profitability, and key business metrics.\nEnsure responsible stewardship of organizational resources.\nBalance financial performance with mission-driven objectives.\nLeadership & Organizational Development\nLead, support, and develop the Director team.\nFoster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.\nSupport leadership development, succession planning, and employee engagement.\nEnsure organizational alignment across multiple departments and functions.\nRetail Operations\nProvide oversight of store operations and customer experience.\nSupport Directors and Managers in achieving operational goals.\nPromote operational excellence while preserving the unique culture of The Merc.\nEnsure a safe, welcoming, and effective environment for employees and customers.\nCommunity & Cooperative Leadership\nServe as a visible representative of The Merc within the community.\nBuild relationships with owners, customers, local producers, vendors, and community partners.\nChampion cooperative values and principles throughout the organization.\nSupport community engagement and cooperative education efforts.\nQualifications\nQualified candidates will typically possess:\nFive (5) or more years of progressive leadership experience in grocery retail, food retail, retail operations, cooperative management, or a related field.\nExperience leading managers, senior leaders, or multi-department operations.\nStrong financial and business acumen.\nExcellent communication, relationship-building, and leadership skills.\nDemonstrated ability to develop teams and navigate organizational change.\nStrong organizational, planning, and problem-solving abilities.\nExperience serving in a senior leadership role (Director, Vice President, General Manager, Executive Director, or equivalent) with organization-wide responsibility is preferred.\nExperience working within a cooperative organization or with a Board of Directors is preferred but not required.\nEquivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.\nWork Authorization Requirement: Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States without employer sponsorship.
