Job Description:

Position Purpose summary:

This position picks-up, delivers, and handles services to and from donors, clients, and ministry units in a safe, careful, and courteous manner and is required to adhere to all laws and safe driving practices while in control and possession of salvation army vehicles and property. Assists in the receiving, shipping, sorting, and handling of all materials secured for Salvation Army Ministry purpose, while assisting in the maintenance of a clean, safe, and hazard-free workplace. This position involves a combination of warehousing/ other duties with some limited driving.

Accountabilities:

The incumbent may perform all, some, or similar duties to the listed below:

Warehouse:

• Unload, sort, pack, store, load donations ensuring integrity of donations are maintained.
• Loading and off-loading of trucks using powered and manual MHE.
• Sort donations for distribution based on established standards of quality and distinguishes between discarded and good quality merchandise according to policy.
• Inspect goods received for quality, damage, expiry (use-by) dates; document, rotate, and store stock appropriately to ensure maximum yield is achieved.
• Sort and categorize food and non-food items.
• Assist with inventory reconciliation (cycle counting).
• Use Warehouse Management System/Inventory Management System to record and facilitate warehouse operations.
• Perform general cleaning and maintenance tasks of warehouse, yard, and equipment as required.
• Inspect powered and manual material handling equipment to ensure safe use.
• Ensures all food items are stored correctly to avoid any potential contamination of such materials.
• Meets assigned daily targets: counts weights and records incoming and outgoing donations.
• Build food hampers for the food bank and deliver them to the appropriate area of center.
• Provide emergency food hampers to clients as directed by caseworker or supervisor.
• Direct work of volunteers assisting in the warehouse.
• Complies with all safety procedures and ensures work area and warehouse (inside and outside) is kept clean and tidy according to guidelines/policy.
• Complies with, but not limited to, wearing of safety shoes/boots/glasses/gloves/clothing (if/as required).
• Clean and sanitize supplies and equipment used.

Pick-up and Delivery:

• Ensure the safe and careful handling of all pick-ups, deliveries, and donations, while protecting property, including public, Salvation Army vehicle, equipment, and donations.
• Load and unload goods at designated facilities or warehouse.
• Demonstrate pleasant manners with the public.

Driving:

• Assume responsibility for the safety, maintenance, cleanliness and limited operation of Salvation Army vehicles.
• Assume responsibility for all receipts and documentation related to maintenance and operation of Salvation Army vehicles including, but not limited to, fuel and maintenance receipts, kilometer/mileage logs, etc. once driving.
• Maintain TSA vehicle log and report any problems to supervisor.
• Maintain knowledge of road safety procedures, legislative and Salvation Army safety policies including, but not limited to, Provincial/Municipal Traffic Act, Health, and Safety Regulations, etc.
• Is responsible for personal payment of all fines and traffic violations incurred while in the possession/operation of a Salvation Army Vehicle.

Perform other work-related duties as assigned.

External: Customer, Donors, Community

MANAGERIAL RESPONSIBILITY:

• Reports directly to: Integrated Mission Manager
• Direct reports: none

May show others how to perform certain procedures

FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:

• Moderate material responsibility.
• Safe material handling and picking up/delivering donations.
• Regular responsibility for minor financial matters and for wise use of own resources.
• May be authorized to handle small amounts of cash.

Working Conditions:

• This is a regular part-time position at 10 hours per week.
• Flexibility in work schedule is required, as work hours may be adjusted based on program needs.
• The work requires frequent amount of sitting, standing, walking, bending, repetitive lifting/sorting, and the ability to lift up to 40 pounds.
• Sustained heavy labour or working in cramped positions over considerable periods. May on occasion be required to lift, move, or transport weights up to 50 lbs but regular weights would normally fall under 40 lbs.
• Working environment is typically in warehouse environment with exposure to handling garbage, monotony of work (repetitive tasks), various odours, with occasional driving periods.
• Work involves regular work in freezers and refrigerators with some outdoor work in winter.

education, experience, AND Qualifications:

• Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
• Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:

• High School Diploma.
• Current First Aid/CPR (can be obtained upon hire).
• W.H.M.I.S.
• Current Forklift Operator certification or willing to obtain upon hire.

Experience and Knowledge:

• Experience in sorting foods and goods
• At least two years of related experience including experience with warehouse processing or goods distribution.
• Demonstrated safe driving skills.

• Valid Driver’s License, personal vehicle and insurance is required; an original copy of a current Driver’s Abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion is required.

Compensation:

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
