TIAA is an American financial services organisation founded in 1918 by the Carnegie Foundation to provide pensions for university teachers who had none, and it remains focused on the academic, medical, government and non-profit sectors. It is structured as a non-profit at the parent level with a for-profit subsidiary, and it is best known for its traditional annuity, an unusual product that pays lifetime income and has shared surplus with participants for over a century. Headquartered in New York, it administers retirement plans for millions of employees and owns the real estate manager Nuveen.

The Wealth Management Product and Architecture Leader will manage a department or unit comprising multiple teams, led by managers, that oversee various categories of Wealth product management, engineering, technical architecture, and operating systems supporting end-user applications.

The role influences stakeholders to adopt approved practices and approaches, communicates effectively with executive leadership, and owns the short- to mid-term (1-3 year) execution of functional strategy and operational direction for information systems.

This new leader also oversees design, architecture, and implementation of technical solutions, ensuring information systems meet user needs and align with the organization's overall information systems architecture.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

  • Leads a multi-year, front-to-back brokerage product platform strategy, overseeing delivery while managing dependencies with core brokerage platforms and vendors for the Wealth business.
  • Partners with business product leaders to develop organizational information systems strategies and goals for Wealth technology platforms.
  • Manages team performance through regular, timely feedback and the formal performance review process; drives engagement, motivation, and development to ensure delivery of exceptional service.

  • Guides the development of key capabilities and performance requirements in system architecture design.

  • Directs operations and maintains strong working relationships with other information systems leaders.
  • Communicates the strategic importance of information systems to department and senior leadership to minimize risk and improve organizational performance and productivity.
  • Provides strategic direction for the development and maintenance of technical architecture and operating systems.

This includes navigating political dynamics across Sales, Marketing, Brokerage, Investment Management, Trading, Wealth Financial Planning, Tax and Real Estate, CRM, Client Services, and middle-office operations.

The role requires sound judgment on vendor relationships, team development, and technology trade-offs-decisions that carry significant organizational risk. Success depends on deep contextual expertise in wealth management (including wealth platforms, trust operations, regulatory compliance, and advisor workflows), paired with strong human skills: inspiring teams through transformation, building cross-functional trust, advising executive leadership on strategy, and balancing competing business priorities. These capabilities draw heavily on experiential judgment, emotional intelligence, and relationship capital.
