We are seeking an experienced Software Engineer to join our Back End Payments Engineering team.\nAbout the Role\nAs a Software Engineer - Back End (Payments), you will play a pivotal role in building and maintaining the card-present payment integrations behind Tillster's self-service kiosks, working with providers such as Adyen, Shift4, and Global Payments.\nYou will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality software solutions that meet business needs while following best practices, including design patterns, architectural patterns, and thorough testing methodologies.\nYou will contribute to fostering an agile, collaborative, and high-performing development environment.\nWhat You'll Do\nBuild and maintain integrations with card-present payment providers (Adyen, Shift4, Global Payments, and others) for Tillster's self-service kiosk platform.\n\nOwn the full transaction lifecycle: authorization, capture, voids, refunds, reversals, and reconciliation, including recovery from timeouts and partial failures.\n\nWork with processor certification teams to get integrations certified and into production.\n\nKeep payment flows PCI DSS compliant, minimizing scope through P2PE and tokenization.\n\nTroubleshoot live payment issues across terminals, kiosks, and backend services.\n\nImplement robust unit tests, integration tests, and end-to-end tests to ensure high-quality code. Work towards achieving high test coverage and adopting test-driven development (TDD) where applicable.\n\nConduct and participate in code reviews, ensuring adherence to coding standards, best practices, and maintainability, while critically evaluating AI-generated code outputs for security and correctness.\n\nParticipate in design sessions to help improve the overall architecture of the platform.\n\nWork with stakeholders and product owners to understand requirements and develop solutions.\n\nContinuously expand your technical knowledge and skills through Tillster's learning and development resources.\n\nAbout You\n2 to 5 years of backend development experience in Java or a comparable object-oriented programming (OOP) language.\n\nExperience implementing comprehensive testing strategies, including unit tests, integration tests, and end-to-end tests.\n\nHands-on experience integrating with at least one payment processor or gateway API; card-present or terminal integration strongly preferred.\n\nUnderstanding of EMV, contactless payments, and authorization and settlement flows.\n\nWorking knowledge of PCI DSS and secure handling of payment data.\n\nComfortable debugging across network, device, and service boundaries.\n\nAbility to communicate effectively in English, with strong verbal and written communication skills.\n\nUnderstanding of security best practices in software development, including OAuth, JWT, encryption, and related technologies.\n\nBachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.\n\nPrior experience with AWS serverless technologies and companion services such as DynamoDB, SQS, etc., is beneficial but not required.\n\nStrong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a mindset geared toward continuous improvement.\n\nComfortable working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, with the ability to handle ambiguity and changing requirements.\n\nThe Interview Process\nRecruiter Interview: Initial conversation with a Talent Acquisition specialist.\n\nCode Review Interview: Technical code review with our Back End Engineering Manager.\n\nPayments Technical Interview: Discussion covering transaction flows, failure handling, and PCI considerations.\n\nFinal Interview: Interview with our SVP of Software Engineering.\n\nPay and Benefits (USA)\nSalary: $105,000 - $135,000 DOE\nHealth Benefits: All full-time, regular employees and their dependents are eligible for medical, dental, vision, and FSA benefits.
