We arethe world’s first mesh energy infrastructure, uniting communities through resilient, sustainable, and intelligent power. We design, engineer, manufacture, install, and support our systems end-to-end, standing behind them throughout their lifecycle. Torus systems help reduce costs, lower emissions, and protect facilities from outages, while strengthening the security and reliability of the broader utility grid. Torus is committed to American manufacturing, engineering excellence, and building energy systems that last.\nTorus has raised over $267 million from investors like Magnetar, Mercado, ICONIQ and Origin Ventures. The investments are helping to accelerate deployment of modular power plants across utilities, data centers, and industrial sectors. This investor confidence reflects the strength of our team, technology as well as the scale of the problem we are solving.\nAt Torus, you will be part of something larger than a single product or technology. Your work will help build energy infrastructure that supports and strengthens our electrical grid, critical systems, industry, and communities for decades to come. We value accountability, collaboration, and clear thinking. We are looking for people who want to solve hard problems and build things that matter.\nAbout the Role\nEmbedded Systems and Firmware @ Torus\nWe’re building energy storage and management solutions that help:\nCommercial and industrial businesses reduce their operating costs while increasing reliability.\nGrid operators keep the electricity grid stable and cost efficient.\nTorus is hiring a Firmware Engineer to be an individual contributor on our firmware team, working in close partnership with our Firmware Architect. This is a hands-on role where you'll translate architectural direction into well-engineered, production-grade firmware.\nOur Tech Stack\nOur firmware application layer is Python on Embedded Linux (Yocto)-not C, not C++. This was a deliberate architectural choice: Python gives us speed-to-market, flexibility to respond to changing grid program requirements, and a clean separation between hardware and application logic. Our comms are primarily RS-485, so Python runtime overhead is seldom the limiting factor.\nIf you've been writing Python to control hardware over serial protocols-in energy, robotics, industrial IoT, or test & measurement-you'll feel immediately at home here. If you've spent your career in C/C++ and are looking for that, this probably isn't the right fit.\nEach Torus device generates over a million data points per day and integrates with our cloud platform via MQTT/AWS IoT. Our systems also participate in Virtual Power Plant (VPP) programs, responding to real-time dispatch signals from utilities-which means our firmware decisions have direct, measurable impact on grid operations.\nWhat You’ll Do\nIn this role, you will report to our Head of Embedded Systems and will be responsible for:\nDeveloping firmware features across our energy storage product lines: telemetry, control loops, cloud connectivity, and hardware abstraction layers.\nOwning system integration -working closely with hardware, data, and software teams to ensure seamless interoperability across the full stack.\nDriving quality through design reviews, automated testing, and documentation. (We believe engineers own their own QA.)\nDebugging and optimizing real-time embedded applications and serial communication interfaces in the field and in the lab.\nSupporting scaling operations -deployment tooling, remote monitoring, and root-cause analysis of field issues across a growing fleet.\nParticipate in on-call rotation for escalated technical issues.\nWho Thrives Here\nYou're a systems thinker who's comfortable owning a problem end-to-end-from a register on a Modbus device to a graph in a customer dashboard. You care about code quality without letting it become a bottleneck. You're energized by the fact that the firmware you write shows up in real buildings, on real grids, doing real work.\nYou don't need to be an energy domain expert on day one-but you're curious about how the grid works and motivated by the idea that good engineering here has an outsized impact on creating sustainable communities.\nYou're also comfortable in a structure where a Firmware Architect sets system-level direction and you're the person who makes it real-bringing deep implementation judgment, surfacing tradeoffs, and pushing back when something won't work in practice.\nRequired Experience\nBS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Embedded Systems, or equivalent practical experience.\n2-5+ years of hands-on experience developing commercial embedded software or firmware applications.\nStrong Python proficiency and real production experience running Python on Embedded Linux (Yocto or similar).\nSolid understanding of serial communication protocols-RS-485, Modbus, I²C, CAN, Ethernet.\nExperience with real-time embedded systems: multi-threading, inter-process communication, timing constraints.\nAbility to read schematics and PCB layouts to troubleshoot hardware integration issues.\nPreferred Experience\nExperience with IoT device management at scale (fleet OTA, remote diagnostics).\nFamiliarity with AWS IoT, MQTT, or data telemetry pipelines.\nExposure to energy storage systems, inverters, or grid-connected hardware.\nKnowledge of VPP programs, demand response, or utility interconnection standards (IEEE 1547, UL 1741).\nExperience with containerized embedded deployments (Docker/Balena on Linux targets).\nCI/CD practices in embedded or hardware-adjacent environments.\nAdditional Details\nBackground Check All candidates are subject to a background check.\nLocation + Travel Remote U.S.-based role with occasional onsite work in Salt Lake City and surrounding area locations (air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned). Must be available during MT business hours.\nCompensation $135,000 - 180,000 (Note: We have the flexibility to hire at different levels, which may impact the corresponding pay range.)\nWork Authorization Applicants must already have the legal authorization to work in the US without requiring any employer sponsorship.\nPhysical Requirements\nRegularly operates a computer and other peripheral office equipment such as a printer or mouse.\nAbility to read, identify, observe and recognize details, color-coding and fine print at close range on associated engineering drawings.\nAbility to communicate information so others can understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.\nMust report to work reliably and with the ability to use full and unimpaired skills and judgment to safely execute your job.\nProficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English required.\nWhen on the production floor, required to don personal protective equipment to include, but not limited to ear protection, gloves, eye protection and/or safety helmet. \nWhen on the production floor, ability to observe, detect and respond to audible and visual machine malfunction warnings.\nOur Perks & Benefits\nBenefits eligibility is based on employment status.\nFinancial\nEmployee Rewards Package including equity\n401(k) Retirement Savings Plan\nTorus paid life and AD&D Insurance with options to purchase additional coverage\nVoluntary short- and long-term disability insurance\nHealth & Wellness\nHealth Benefits Package: Choice between traditional PPO or HSA-eligible medical plans with Torus covering 50% of medical premiums; Dental insurance; and Vision insurance\nPlan participants have access to telehealth services, mental health support and coaching, and exclusive discounts on brands, dining, entertainment, and more.\nTime Off\nUnlimited discretionary PTO\n10 paid company holidays\nWaiting period-free 100% paid parental leave\nCulture & Community\nRegular company-wide offsites to showcase our progress and learnings. A time to step back, think strategically, and work on the business together.\nTeam members receive Torus branded gear\nPeer Recognition Program\nFully stocked break rooms with free snacks and drinks. Because great work deserves great fuel.\nTorus is proud to be an Equal Opportunity Employer. All applicants will be considered for employment without attention to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, veteran, or disability status.\nTorus participates in E-Verify. Once you accept a job offer, we will provide the Social Security Administration (SSA) and, if necessary, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) with information from your Form I-9 to confirm work authorization.","description_format":"text","description_chars":8690,"description_truncated":false,"requirements":{"experience_years_min":2,"management_years_min":null,"team_size_min":null,"manages_managers":false,"education":{"level":"bachelor","optional":false},"security_clearance":false,"languages":[{"language":"English","level":"All levels","optional":false}]},"benefits":["Dental insurance","Equity","Parental leave","Retirement plans","Vision insurance"],"hiring_locations":[{"name":"United States","iso":"US","kind":"country"}],"hiring_excludes":[],"relocation_offered":false,"industries":["Energy Storage","Energy Management"],"lifecycle":[{"event":"open","at":"2026-10-31T00:32:10Z"}],"visa":[{"country":"US","licensed_sponsor":true,"evidence":"H-1B filings in 12 months: 1","filings_12m":1,"filings_prev_12m":0,"green_card_filings_12m":0,"median_offered_wage_usd":192500,"route":null,"cap_exempt":false,"checked_at":"2026-10-29T16:27:21+00:00","sources":["US Department of Labor: LCA disclosure data (H-1B, H-1B1, E-3)"],"filings_for_role_12m":0}],"liveness":{"score":86,"band":"hot","label":"Hiring now","p_open":1,"p_active":0.86,"p_room":1,"age_days":0,"expected_fill_days":46,"reasons":["conf:1","win:early","comp:junior"],"computed_at":"2026-10-31T05:58:55Z"},"pay":{"stated_usd_annual":180000,"is_top_pay":true},"html_url":"https://alion.io/job/torus-firmware-engineer-python-embedded-linux","json_url":"https://alion.io/job/torus-firmware-engineer-python-embedded-linux.json","meta":{"generated_at":"2026-10-31T18:18:04Z","cache_seconds":300,"methodology":"https://alion.io/methodology","terms":"https://alion.io/terms","contact":"https://alion.io/contact","api":"https://alion.io/developers","about":"Alion is a live layer of people, companies and AI agents: who they are, whether they are real and active right now, what they do and how to work with them, readable by people and by agents and paid per call.","catalog":"https://alion.io/catalog.json","usage":{"tier":"crawler_verified","counted_by":"address","units_charged":1,"used_today":28544,"day_limit":null,"remaining_today":null,"minute_limit":300,"resets_at":"2026-11-01T00:00:00Z"}},"offers":[{"id":"company.slices","title":"One company in depth, by slice","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002,"plus_per_slice":{"credits":0.05,"usd":0.005}},"unit":"per company, plus each slice with data","note":"the employer in depth","call":{"mcp_tool":"get_company","arguments":{"id":3781612},"rest":"https://alion.io/mcp/rest/get_company?id=3781612"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.slices&for=job%2Ftorus-firmware-engineer-python-embedded-linux"},{"id":"market.stats","title":"A market slice: pay, demand and time to fill","status":"live","price":{"credits":1,"usd":0.1},"unit":"per slice","note":"pay, demand and time to fill for this role and place","call":{"mcp_tool":"market_stats"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=market.stats&for=job%2Ftorus-firmware-engineer-python-embedded-linux"},{"id":"job.search","title":"Open jobs by role, technology, place, pay and visa","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002},"unit":"per posting in a list","note":"similar open postings","call":{"mcp_tool":"search_jobs"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=job.search&for=job%2Ftorus-firmware-engineer-python-embedded-linux"},{"id":"company.verify","title":"Is this company real and active right now","status":"pilot","price":null,"unit":"per company","request":{"url":"https://alion.io/catalog/request","method":"POST","body":"{\"offer\": \"company.verify\", \"for\": \"job/torus-firmware-engineer-python-embedded-linux\", \"note\": \"what you need it for\"}"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.verify&for=job%2Ftorus-firmware-engineer-python-embedded-linux"}],"agent":{"mcp":"https://alion.io/mcp/jobs","mcp_open":"https://alion.io/mcp/open","next":[{"tool":"get_job","arguments":{"id":3555306}},{"tool":"search_jobs","arguments":{"company":"torus.co","detail":"compact"}},{"tool":"match_people","arguments":{"job_id":3555306},"note":"people open to offers who fit this vacancy"}],"note":"The same data through MCP tools: https://alion.io/mcp/open needs no sign-in (compact searches, postings, people); https://alion.io/mcp with an Alion account has everything.
