Direct line management responsibility of up to 6.\nComplexity:\nResource Complexity: Lead and manage diverse, multidisciplinary teams, providing strategic oversight and ensuring high-quality outcomes.\nProblem-Solving Responsibility: Address complex technical and architectural challenges, aligning solutions with strategic business objectives.\nChange Management Requirements: Lead transformational change in software practices, fostering innovation and adopting new technologies.\nInternal/External Interactions: Engage with senior stakeholders, clients, and cross-functional teams as a trusted technical advisor.\nStrategic Timeframe: Focus on setting and executing long-term technical strategies that influence the broader organisation and clients.\nABOUT YOU\nResponsibilities\nLead the design and development of advanced software solutions, ensuring high standards of quality, security and scalability.\nSet the technical direction for projects and influence the wider technology strategy.\nProvide line management for a group of engineers (typically up to six), supporting their career progression and ensuring they’re set up for success.\nProvide technical leadership and coaching, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration and continuous learning.\nCollaborate with senior stakeholders to translate complex business problems into elegant, robust solutions.\nChampion modern engineering practices including CI/CD, test automation and infrastructure as code.\nFoster a DevOps culture that enables teams to build, deploy and run their services confidently through automation and continuous delivery.\nDrive the evaluation and adoption of emerging technologies to improve how we deliver software.\nLead technical due diligence during project scoping, bids and new opportunities.\nRepresent the engineering function in strategic discussions, influencing our technology roadmap.\nAnticipate and manage project risks, helping teams navigate complex technical challenges.\nABOUT YOU\nProfessional knowledge and experience\nEssential:\nExtensive experience in software engineering, with a focus on large-scale, complex systems.\nPolyglot engineer comfortable working across multiple languages and frameworks (we’ve used Python, Java, Kotlin, Node.js, C#, JavaScript, Express, React and Next.js to name a few).\nPassion for learning new technologies and helping others do the same.\nProven track record of leading software architecture design and strategic technology initiatives.\nStrong expertise in cloud platforms, microservices and modern software development practices.\nExperience with direct line management and mentoring junior to senior engineers.\nExcellent communication skills. Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.\nDesirable:\nExperience working in a consultancy environment, managing client relationships at a senior level.\nExperience delivering government or public sector projects.\nEligible for (or holding) SC security clearance\nKnowledge of AI, machine learning, or other emerging technologies relevant to software engineering.\nExperience promoting knowledge sharing.
