As part of our comprehensive compensation and benefits program, employees are also eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards.\nSalary Range\n$139,400.00 - $230,000.00Target Openings\n1What Is the Opportunity?\nTravelers Data Engineering team constructs pipelines that contextualize and provide easy access to data by the entire enterprise. As a Data Engineering Director you will accelerate growth and transformation of our analytics landscape. In this role, you will lead teams designing and building data solutions that capture, explore, transform and utilize data to support Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and business intelligence/insights. In addition to ingesting data from multiple sources and relaying information to relevant partners, you will also mentor and develop a team of data engineers.What Will You Do?\nSet technical direction for the data platform (Databricks, DBT, AWS), including medallion architecture standards (Raw → Stage → Domain → Data Product)\nOwn the technical aspects of all projects led by Tech Leads, including architecture, design decisions, code quality, and technical delivery\nProvide technical mentoring and guidance to the Tech Leads.\nManage, mentor, and develop EDPs and junior engineers, including one-on-ones, performance feedback, structured learning plans, code reviews, and career development\nHelp place EDPs and junior engineers on project work that builds their skills, partnering with the Tech Leads on assignments and day-to-day direction\nUse Claude and other AI tools to accelerate source-to-target mapping for Domains and Data Products, speeding up design, documentation, and validation while keeping human review and engineering standards in place\nPartner with product, business, and architecture stakeholders to prioritize and sequence work across teams\nDrive engineering excellence: CI/CD, testing, data quality, and observability\nOversee production support readiness and operational stability\nCollaborate with the hiring manager on resourcing across onshore employees and offshore contractors\nWhat Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?\nBachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or Related Field/Equivalent Experience.\nFive or more years of data engineering experience.\nHands-on expertise with Databricks, DBT, and AWS\nProven experience managing and developing early-career engineers, including coaching, performance management, and structured skill development\nProven experience providing technical leadership to multiple teams or Tech Leads without direct reporting authority, influencing through expertise and collaboration\nStrong communication skills and the ability to influence across technical and business audiences\nAdditional Preferred Skills & Experience:Experience with Unity Catalog, Delta Lake, and Databricks governance\nExperience with orchestration and CI/CD tooling\nInsurance or financial services domain experience\nExperience managing blended onshore/offshore teams\nHands-on experience applying generative AI tools, such as Claude, to accelerate data engineering work like mapping, documentation, and code development\nExperience with early career or rotational development programs, such as EDP\nRelevant certifications (Databricks, AWS)\n\nWhat is a Must Have?\nBachelor’s degree in computer science, related STEM field, or its equivalent in education and/or work experience.\n6 additional years of data engineering experience.\nWhat Is in It for You?\nHealth Insurance: Employees and their eligible family members - including spouses, domestic partners, and children - are eligible for coverage from the first day of employment.\n Retirement: Travelers matches your 401(k) contributions dollar-for-dollar up to your first 5% of eligible pay, subject to an annual maximum.
