Traversal is built for that challenge, autonomously understanding and reasoning across even the largest, most complex production environments to diagnose, fix, and prevent incidents. Our mission is to free engineers from endless firefighting and give them more time to focus on creative, high-impact work.\nToday, Traversal operates in mission-critical environments at some of the world’s largest enterprises. Our roots remain deeply embedded in AI research, and we’ve brought together researchers from institutions including MIT, Harvard, Berkeley, Columbia, and Cornell with world-class technical staff and operators from companies like Google, Meta, Datadog, ServiceNow, and Citadel Securities to take on one of the hardest problems for AI to solve. Traversal is backed by Sequoia Capital, Kleiner Perkins, Hanabi, NFDG, and American Express Ventures.\nThe Role\nAs a Security Engineer at Traversal, your mission is to raise the security floor across the company by building AI-native security mechanisms tailored to how we work. This is not a compliance role, and it isn’t about the basics like adding SAST to pipelines. You’ll partner with our security leadership team to shape the security roadmap across product, cloud, and infrastructure, and you’ll own broad-scope projects within it: designing and shipping the secure foundations Traversal engineers build on, and driving us toward a future where automated verification, not manual code review, decides whether a change is safe to ship. You’ll also build security capabilities directly into Traversal’s products and cloud infrastructure to safeguard our enterprise customers and their data.\nTraversal serves Fortune 50 enterprises across multi-tenant environments, BYOC deployments, and several compliance regimes. Your work will span application behavior, identity, infrastructure, deployment boundaries, data security, and access controls, continuously pushing Traversal’s security posture forward.\nWe welcome strong software and infrastructure engineers who have owned security-critical systems and want to specialize in security. We also welcome experienced security engineers who want to build. Either way, you’ll lead and deliver your area independently. This is a senior, high-impact role: you’ll own foundational security systems end to end. As your scope grows, you’ll also set technical direction across related work streams and build capabilities other teams adopt and extend.\nResponsibilities\nSecure Constructs & Paved Paths: Design and ship the libraries, defaults, and workflows that make the secure way to build at Traversal the easiest way.\n\nSecurity Invariants & Guardrails: Define and implement controls that continuously verify security properties across our products and cloud infrastructure.\n\nBuild Security into Products: Design and ship security capabilities in Traversal’s products that support enterprise security teams.\n\nFindings to Fixes: Discover issues, verify them, assess them, ship fixes with system owners, and add tests or controls that prevent recurrence.\n\nSecurity Architecture: Architect security systems and major components, defining the interfaces, invariants, and evolution paths that let them scale across SaaS and BYOC deployments.\n\nDelivery & Adoption: Lead multi-phase rollouts, migrations, and deprecations across teams with careful sequencing and de-risking, and land them with enablement and measurable success criteria.\n\nOperational Ownership: Ship operationally complete systems with monitoring, alert quality, runbooks, and safe rollout and upgrade paths; debug and resolve security issues in your area.\n\nTechnical Direction: Set direction for scoped security domains, connect technical work to customer and business outcomes, and use results to shape the follow-up roadmap with product and engineering leadership.\n\nMentorship & Leverage: Mentor engineers and emerging technical leaders, and create patterns, libraries, and reference implementations that let others extend your work without depending on you.\n\nRequirements\n4-6+ years building or securing production software or infrastructure at technically rigorous companies or teams, including sensitive, mission-critical systems.\n\nProven ability to independently lead ambiguous, cross-team security projects from design through implementation, migration, and adoption, with minimal structure.\n\nStrong programming skills in a language such as Python, Rust, or Go and the ability to work effectively in an existing codebase.\n\nHands-on depth in application security or cloud security, with working knowledge of the other, gained either in a security role or by owning security-critical systems as a software or infrastructure engineer.\n\nTechnical depth in risk assessment. Looks at standards like NIST & SOC2 as a starting point, and not necessarily the right baseline.\n\nPractical understanding of authentication, authorization, trust boundaries, secrets, and common failure modes in distributed systems.\n\nClear written communication and a collaborative approach to technical disagreements.\n\nNice to Have\nExperience with enterprise customer security requirements.\n\nExperience building on and securing infrastructure-as-code (e.g., Terraform) and container orchestration systems (e.g., Kubernetes).\n\nDetection engineering, security telemetry, or automated control validation.\n\nOffensive testing experience paired with shipped remediations.\n\nExperience with applying formal methods for security.\n\nYou don’t need experience in every area above. We’re interested in what you’ve built, how you made decisions, and how your work changed the systems and teams around you.\nCompensation\nWe offer competitive compensation, startup equity, health insurance, and additional benefits. The U.S. base salary range for this full-time, in-person role in New York is $240,000-$300,000, plus equity and benefits. Our salary ranges are based on location, level, and role. Individual compensation is determined by experience, skills, and job-related knowledge.\nWhy You Should Join Us\nTraversal is a place to take on hard, meaningful problems with real ownership from day one. You’ll work alongside people who challenge you to grow, learn constantly, and help define a new category of infrastructure software. We think long term, move quickly, and hold a high bar without taking ourselves too seriously.\nWe offer competitive salary and equity packages, health insurance, fertility benefits, a great tech setup stipend and flexible time off. Plus in-office snacks, team happy hours and outings, an annual company offsite, and plenty of built in time to collaborate across teams.\nTraversal is fully in-office, 5 days a week, based in New York near Madison Square Park. We have a collaborative, hard-working culture and are energized by building the future of AI-powered software maintenance.","description_format":"text","description_chars":7055,"description_truncated":false,"requirements":{"experience_years_min":4,"management_years_min":null,"team_size_min":null,"manages_managers":false,"education":null,"security_clearance":false,"languages":[]},"benefits":["Equity","Flexible time off","Health insurance"],"hiring_locations":[],"hiring_excludes":[],"relocation_offered":false,"industries":["AI Agents","Observability & APM"],"lifecycle":[{"event":"open","at":"2026-10-20T22:18:29Z"}],"visa":[{"country":"US","licensed_sponsor":true,"evidence":"H-1B filings in 12 months: 6","filings_12m":6,"filings_prev_12m":0,"green_card_filings_12m":0,"median_offered_wage_usd":232500,"route":null,"cap_exempt":false,"checked_at":"2026-10-15T11:24:14+00:00","sources":["US Department of Labor: LCA disclosure data (H-1B, H-1B1, E-3)"],"filings_for_role_12m":1}],"liveness":{"score":86,"band":"hot","label":"Hiring now","p_open":1,"p_active":0.86,"p_room":1,"age_days":0,"expected_fill_days":30,"reasons":["conf:0","win:early"],"computed_at":"2026-10-21T05:46:15Z"},"pay":{"stated_usd_annual":300000,"is_top_pay":true},"html_url":"https://alion.io/job/traversal-security-engineer","json_url":"https://alion.io/job/traversal-security-engineer.json","meta":{"generated_at":"2026-10-21T15:11:13Z","cache_seconds":300,"methodology":"https://alion.io/methodology","terms":"https://alion.io/terms","contact":"https://alion.io/contact","api":"https://alion.io/developers","about":"Alion is a live layer of people, companies and AI agents: who they are, whether they are real and active right now, what they do and how to work with them, readable by people and by agents and paid per call.","catalog":"https://alion.io/catalog.json","usage":{"tier":"crawler_verified","counted_by":"address","units_charged":1,"used_today":21635,"day_limit":null,"remaining_today":null,"minute_limit":300,"resets_at":"2026-10-22T00:00:00Z"}},"offers":[{"id":"company.slices","title":"One company in depth, by slice","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002,"plus_per_slice":{"credits":0.05,"usd":0.005}},"unit":"per company, plus each slice with data","note":"the employer in depth","call":{"mcp_tool":"get_company","arguments":{"id":173605},"rest":"https://alion.io/mcp/rest/get_company?id=173605"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.slices&for=job%2Ftraversal-security-engineer"},{"id":"market.stats","title":"A market slice: pay, demand and time to fill","status":"live","price":{"credits":1,"usd":0.1},"unit":"per slice","note":"pay, demand and time to fill for this role and place","call":{"mcp_tool":"market_stats"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=market.stats&for=job%2Ftraversal-security-engineer"},{"id":"job.search","title":"Open jobs by role, technology, place, pay and visa","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002},"unit":"per posting in a list","note":"similar open postings","call":{"mcp_tool":"search_jobs"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=job.search&for=job%2Ftraversal-security-engineer"},{"id":"company.verify","title":"Is this company real and active right now","status":"pilot","price":null,"unit":"per company","request":{"url":"https://alion.io/catalog/request","method":"POST","body":"{\"offer\": \"company.verify\", \"for\": \"job/traversal-security-engineer\", \"note\": \"what you need it for\"}"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.verify&for=job%2Ftraversal-security-engineer"}]}
