To bring these therapies to many more people, manufacturing must change too, becoming far more scalable, reliable and efficient. At Cellular Origins you’ll help build the firmware that drives our robotic manufacturing technology, so more patients can access life-changing treatments sooner.\nAs a Senior Firmware Engineer, you’ll sit at the intersection of software, electronics and automation. You’ll take technical ownership of turning motion, sensing and control ideas into reliable, production-ready firmware that keeps our systems running smoothly in a bioprocess environment. You’ll regularly see your code make motors move, sensors respond and complex systems run reliably.\n You’ll join a multidisciplinary team of engineers and scientists working on our core automation platform, from first prototypes through to production systems. You’ll design, implement and test firmware that runs on ARM microcontrollers, work directly with hardware on the bench, and help shape technical decisions across firmware, electronics and the wider system.\nThis is not a role confined to the firmware team: you may spend as much time working with electronics, mechanical, automation and systems engineers, and with biologists, as you do with other firmware or software engineers. You’ll need to enjoy crossing disciplinary boundaries and learning enough about the wider system to help make it work as one coherent whole.\nIn this role, you’ll:\nOwn firmware development for key parts of our core technology, from requirements and architecture through implementation, verification and support in production.\nWrite and review high-quality C for ARM microcontrollers (primarily STM32), focusing on robust, maintainable and testable code.\nDesign and maintain automated tests for embedded firmware, including unit, integration and hardware-in-the-loop, and integrate them into continuous integration workflows.\nTurn system needs into clear firmware requirements and interfaces, working directly with electronics, mechanical, automation and software engineers, plus biologists.\nMake and communicate technical decisions within your area, balancing engineering rigour, maintainability and delivery speed, and support other engineers through design discussions and code reviews.\nDebug complex embedded-system issues using tools such as debug probes, oscilloscopes, multimeters and logic analysers, getting to the root cause of tricky problems.\nUse Linux-based tools and development environments as part of your day-to-day work.\nSupport and occasionally develop custom test equipment for internal use, helping the wider team move faster.\nUse higher-level languages such as Python, C# or Java to build supporting tools and simple GUIs for debugging, testing or internal users.\nDepending on your experience, you may also:\nTurn your hand to electronics design and prototype modification when needed, working with electronics engineers to shape interfaces and resolve cross-discipline issues.\nDevelop and optimise hard real-time algorithms for motion control, sensing or safety-critical functions.\nUse Docker and containers to create reliable, repeatable development and test environments.\nContribute to embedded Linux software and the interfaces between it and our microcontroller firmware.\n About you\nYou enjoy seeing firmware come to life in real hardware, and you like being close to the bench, motors and sensors rather than hidden away from the physical system. You are comfortable owning firmware end to end, from first requirements and architecture through to code that ships, and you get energy from solving problems with people from different technical backgrounds.\nWe’re looking for:\nA strong track record of designing and delivering embedded systems, with the judgement to take ownership and make pragmatic technical decisions independently.\nExtensive professional experience developing firmware in C and/or C++ on ARM microcontrollers, ideally STM32.\nStrong experience developing and maintaining automated tests for embedded systems, including using them within continuous integration workflows.\nConfidence working directly with hardware and independently debugging complex systems at both code and signal level.\nStrong skills in interpreting component datasheets and electronics schematics, and using them to inform design and debugging.\nA collaborative, entrepreneurial approach, with the ability to explain technical trade-offs, support other engineers and solve problems with people from very different disciplines.\n Cellular Origins is currently based on the TTP Campus, within purpose-built sustainable offices, labs and green surroundings, 10 miles south of Cambridge. Our working culture encourages entrepreneurship, shared ideas and collaboration, while providing you the freedom to do your best work.\nOur employee benefits include:\nAnnual bonus \n25 days holiday \nEmployer pension contribution of 10% of salary \nPrivate medical insurance for employees and dependants \nEnhanced family friendly leave \nLife insurance worth 6x salary \nElectric car leasing scheme \nCycle to work scheme \nSeason ticket loan","description_format":"text","description_chars":5242,"description_truncated":false,"requirements":{"experience_years_min":null,"management_years_min":null,"team_size_min":null,"manages_managers":false,"education":null,"security_clearance":false,"languages":[]},"benefits":["Health insurance","Life insurance"],"hiring_locations":[],"hiring_excludes":[],"relocation_offered":false,"industries":["Biomedical Engineering","Engineering Services"],"lifecycle":[{"event":"open","at":"2026-09-17T07:52:58Z"}],"liveness":{"score":81,"band":"hot","label":"Hiring now","p_open":1,"p_active":0.809,"p_room":1,"age_days":11,"expected_fill_days":39,"reasons":["conf:6","velocity","win:early"],"computed_at":"2026-09-26T05:45:00Z"},"pay":null,"html_url":"https://alion.io/job/ttp-senior-firmware-engineer","json_url":"https://alion.io/job/ttp-senior-firmware-engineer.json","meta":{"generated_at":"2026-09-27T03:01:25Z","cache_seconds":300,"methodology":"https://alion.io/methodology","terms":"https://alion.io/terms","contact":"https://alion.io/contact","api":"https://alion.io/developers","usage":{"tier":"crawler","counted_by":"address","units_charged":1,"used_today":2767,"day_limit":5000,"remaining_today":2233,"minute_limit":60,"resets_at":"2026-09-28T00:00:00Z"}}}
