Professor of Practice, Recording Engineer

Tulane University is hiring a Professor of Practice to teach courses in Recording Engineering and manage a newly built studio space. The position will be shared between the Newcomb Department of Music and the Digital Media Practices (DMP) program within the School of Liberal Arts (SLA). We are seeking a candidate who is both a practitioner in the field of audio engineering and a teacher capable of introducing college students to the many facets of sound, including recording, design, multi-channel mixing, spatial audio, ADR, foley, and video podcasting. The position has a start date of July 1, 2027 and is contracted as a standard 9-month appointment.

Competitive candidates will have knowledge of classroom teaching at the college or university level. The candidate will help develop a structured curricular pathway in studio production for Music majors and the Sound Pathway in the DMP Coordinate Major. The position has a 2/2 teaching load of courses such as “Music Recording Techniques I and II,” “Introduction to Audio Technology,” “TV and Film Sound Design” and “Multi-channel Mixing for Film.”

The candidate should also have experience and demonstrated success in the recording industry and cinema audio. The reduced teaching load will allow the faculty member to serve as the Studio Manager in our new institutional hub for music recording and podcasting projects. Duties will include overseeing day-to-day student usage of the space, supervising student workers, advising on equipment purchases and maintenance, and acting as the primary liaison between Music and DMP in the shared facility.

Qualifications

By the time of the appointment, the candidate must hold a bachelor’s degree, with a graduate degree preferred. The candidate should demonstrate experience as both a practitioner and teacher in the field of sound recording.
