Operations Superintendent - Traveling

We are currently seeking an experienced Operations Superintendent to lead field operations across mining and heavy civil projects. This is a hands-on leadership role for an experienced field professional who can manage crews, coordinate equipment and production, solve operational problems in real time, and step into equipment when necessary to keep the project moving.

This position requires significant travel to project locations. Housing will be provided while assigned to each project.

Position Summary

The Operations Superintendent is responsible for the safe, efficient, and productive execution of field operations across mining and heavy civil projects. This individual will oversee crews, equipment, schedules, and day-to-day production while serving as a key field leader between project management and site personnel.

The ideal candidate has a strong combination of mining and heavy civil experience, understands large-scale earthmoving operations, and is comfortable working directly alongside crews in the field. This is not strictly an office-based management position; the Superintendent must be willing and able to troubleshoot field issues, make operational decisions, and operate heavy equipment when needed.

Key Responsibilities

Field Operations & Production

• Lead day-to-day field operations across mining and heavy civil projects
• Coordinate manpower, equipment, and resources to meet production and schedule requirements
• Develop and execute daily and weekly work plans based on project priorities
• Monitor production progress and adjust operations as field conditions change
• Identify bottlenecks, equipment limitations, and operational challenges and implement practical field solutions
• Maintain a strong field presence and ensure work is progressing safely and efficiently
• Coordinate earthmoving, excavation, grading, haulage, site development, and related field activities

Crew Leadership

• Supervise foremen, equipment operators, laborers, and other field personnel
• Provide clear direction regarding daily production expectations, work areas, and priorities
• Lead pre-shift meetings, toolbox talks, and daily crew assignments
• Coach and mentor field personnel to improve safety, productivity, and equipment utilization
• Hold crews accountable for production, safety, workmanship, and company standards
• Assist with staffing decisions and identify additional manpower or equipment needs

Equipment & Hands-On Support

• Coordinate utilization of heavy equipment including haul trucks, excavators, dozers, loaders, graders, and similar machinery
• Ensure equipment is being operated safely and effectively
• Recognize mechanical or operational issues and coordinate repairs or maintenance as needed
• Assist operators with troubleshooting production or equipment-related challenges
• Operate heavy equipment when necessary to support production, cover manpower gaps, or resolve field issues
• Work closely with maintenance teams to minimize equipment downtime

Safety & Compliance

• Promote and enforce a strong safety culture across all field operations
• Ensure compliance with MSHA requirements, company policies, and site-specific safety procedures
• Conduct field inspections and identify hazards, unsafe conditions, or operational risks
• Participate in incident investigations and corrective-action planning when required
• Ensure crews consistently follow PPE, equipment, and safe-work requirements

Project Coordination

• Communicate regularly with project managers and senior operations leadership regarding production, manpower, equipment, and project challenges
• Coordinate with subcontractors, vendors, maintenance personnel, and client representatives as required
• Provide accurate daily production updates, operational reports, and field documentation
• Assist with short-term planning, sequencing, and resource allocation
• Help maintain project schedules while balancing safety, production, equipment availability, and field conditions

Qualifications

• Significant field experience in mining, heavy civil construction, or large-scale earthmoving operations
• Experience working in both mining and heavy civil environments strongly preferred
• Previous experience as a Superintendent, General Foreman, Foreman, or similar field leadership position
• Demonstrated experience leading equipment operators and field crews
• Strong knowledge of excavation, earthmoving, grading, haulage, production, and equipment coordination
• Hands-on experience operating heavy equipment such as excavators, dozers, loaders, graders, or haul trucks
• Strong mechanical and operational understanding of heavy equipment
• Ability to diagnose field problems and make sound operational decisions under pressure
• Strong leadership, communication, and personnel-management skills
• Working knowledge of MSHA regulations and mining safety practices
• Ability to maintain accurate production reports and field documentation
• Valid driver's license and ability to travel extensively

Travel Requirements

• This is a heavy-travel position supporting projects in multiple locations
• Candidates must be comfortable working extended assignments away from home
• Housing will be provided at each project location
• Project schedules and rotations may vary depending on operational requirements
