Twilio is an American company founded in 2008 that turned telecommunications into an application programming interface, letting developers add phone calls, text messages, email and verification to software without dealing with carriers directly. Its communications business covers programmable voice and messaging, the email service SendGrid and the Verify product used for one-time passcodes, while a separate segment sells a customer data platform that unifies user profiles across systems. Headquartered in San Francisco and listed on the New York Stock Exchange, it is priced by usage rather than by seat, which ties its revenue closely to customer message and call volumes.
