This is what you need to know:\nLocation: Madison, WI\nSalary: $25-$30 per hour, 40 hours per week\nContract: 12-week contract - Summer 2027 (May 24th Start Date)\nReporting to: Sr. RF Engineer\nYour role in the mission:\nAs a Radio Frequency Engineering Intern, you will contribute to the design and development of electromagnetic (EM) systems and components for our fusion energy projects. Working alongside experienced engineers and physicists, you’ll gain hands-on experience diving into a complex and multi-faceted radio frequency (RF) project, leveraging EM analysis tools like ANSYS or COMSOL Multiphysics for 3D modelling, while learning about the technical challenges and trade-offs inherent to RF design and development in a cutting-edge R&D environment.\nKey responsibilities could include:\nDesign RF and optical components using tools such as COMSOL and ANSYS\nGain a deeper understanding of RF performance through a combination of analytical and numerical solutions\nProvide trade-off estimations using MATLAB or Python (or equivalent language)\nWork with Vector Network Analyzers to measure RF performance of components\nAssess multi-physics interactions such as plasma absorption characteristics or RF-based heating\nContribute to design reviews and documentation to ensure accuracy and manufacturability\nCorrelate analysis results with hand calculations, test data, or prototype inspection results.\nCollaborate with engineers across disciplines (mechanical, electrical, systems) to support ongoing development projects\nParticipate in prototype fabrication, inspection, and testing as needed\nWhat you’ll need:\nPursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Radio Frequency Engineering\nStrong understanding of RF design fundamentals and principles\nCoursework or project experience with EM modelling using Ansys, COMSOL, AWR or equivalent solver\nAbility to critically evaluate simulation results, including checking for mesh convergence and reasonableness of boundary conditions\nAbility to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment\nStrong attention to detail and solid problem-solving skills\nNice to have:\nScripting experience (Python, MATLAB, or equivalent language) to automate or post-process simulation runs\nFamiliarity with Electron Cyclotron Heating (ECH) principles for plasma\nType One Energy applies proven advanced manufacturing methods, modern computational physics and high-field superconducting magnets to develop its optimized stellarator fusion energy system.
