We're building out a high-velocity team of multi-disciplinary experts to turn real-world operations into high-quality data for our autonomous partners. This team is focused on the hardest problem in AV today: unlocking real-world, long-tail driving data. Autonomy is now a data race-and Uber has an edge: We collect rare, real-world driving data at a scale and capital efficiency no one else can match.\nOur AV Labs Hardware team is building the next-generation E/E architecture for our L4 data-collection vehicle fleet. The automotive MCU beside the main compute platform owns what must always work: vehicle network access, power sequencing, thermal and voltage supervision, time synchronization, and secure firmware updates. You will own that firmware from third-party board support through bring-up and deployment of our in-house production hardware.\nWhat the Candidate Will Do\n Core firmware and drivers: Design, write and maintain C firmware and drivers for automotive MCUs (Infineon AURIX TriCore) on FreeRTOS and AUTOSAR Classic: CAN-FD, Ethernet, SPI, I2C, LIN, ADC, PWM and on-board devices such as switches, PMICs and IMUs.\nVehicle I/O: Own the bridge between vehicle CAN-FD buses and the compute SoC, including buffering, filtering, timestamping and latency.\nPower, thermal and time: Implement power sequencing, sleep and wake, voltage and temperature monitoring, fan control, SoC watchdog and reset supervision, and gPTP and PPS time distribution.\n Bootloader and secure update: Own the bootloader and dual-bank (A/B) update path, including versioning, signing, rollback and recovery of field units.\nBring-up and co-design: Own board bring-up and validation for custom hardware. Join schematic reviews with hardware engineers, and debug with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers and on-chip debuggers such as Lauterbach TRACE32.\nSupplier code and releases: Integrate and regression-test supplier firmware drops, keep builds automated and reproducible, and mentor teammates on code quality and best practices.\nBasic Qualifications\nEmbedded experience: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or a related field, with 7+ years developing embedded software in C/C++ on an RTOS or bare metal.\n Automotive MCU expertise: Hands-on firmware and driver work on automotive-grade MCUs (AURIX TC3xx preferred; Renesas RH850, NXP S32 or similar considered), with CAN/CAN-FD and Ethernet, board bring-up, and hardware debugging tools.\nProduction lifecycle: Experience taking embedded systems from prototype and third-party integration to production, ideally in autonomous vehicle, robotics or mission-critical automotive domains.\nPreferred Qualifications\n Security: Hardware security module (HSM) and secure boot experience, including secure update, key management and chain of trust on automotive MCUs.\n AURIX and AUTOSAR: AURIX iLLD and AUTOSAR Classic (MCAL and BSW configuration with tools such as Vector or ETAS).\n Functional safety: ISO 26262 (ASIL B through D) and MISRA C, including safety mechanisms such as watchdogs, memory protection and E2E.\n Timing: PTP/gPTP (IEEE 802.1AS) and hardware PPS routing across vehicle networks.\n AV compute platforms: MCU-to-SoC interfaces on autonomous driving platforms such as NVIDIA DRIVE or Jetson.\n For Sunnyvale, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD $180,000 per year - USD $200,000 per year.\nYou will be eligible to participate in Uber's bonus program, and may be offered an equity award & other types of comp.
