In this role, you'll lead a full-service department operating at the scale and complexity of a mid-sized municipality: overseeing plan reviews, permitting, inspections, code interpretation, staff development, and budget management across a broad portfolio of campus construction, renovation, and infrastructure projects, while partnering with architects, engineers, contractors, and university leadership to keep one of the nation's largest and most active campuses building safely and compliantly.\nResponsibilities:\nDepartment Leadership & Operations\nLead and oversee Building Department operations, programs, and staff.\nHire, develop, and ensure appropriate training and licensure of Building Department staff.\nOversee departmental budgeting, expenditures, and operational planning.\nCode Administration & Compliance\nServe as the University's designated Building Code Official and code authority.\nEnsure compliance with applicable building codes, regulations, and state requirements.\nDirect plan reviews, building inspections, and code interpretation activities.\nManage permitting processes, inspection scheduling, fee administration, and recordkeeping.\nStrategy & Stakeholder Engagement\nProvide strategic leadership and guidance on construction compliance, facility safety, and code-related initiatives.\nDevelop and implement policies and procedures supporting construction and renovation projects.\nCollaborate with architects, engineers, contractors, university stakeholders, and regulatory agencies.\nMinimum Qualifications:\nHigh School Diploma or Equivalent and 10+ years of relevant experience or a Bachelor's degree and 6+ years of relevant experience. Must have State of Florida certification as a Building Code Administrator. Must hold state certification and licensure as a standard Plans Examiner in all 4 trades (building, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing).\nPreferred Qualifications:\nDegree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, Public Administration, Building Construction, or a related field.\nFlorida Building Official certification.\nExperience serving as a Building Official, Chief Building Official, or Building Department leader within a public-sector, municipal, higher education, or similarly complex organization.\nExperience overseeing building permitting, inspections, plans review, and code compliance programs.\nExperience leading and developing professional and technical staff, including licensed code professionals.\nExperience managing departmental budgets, fee structures, and operational resources.\nExperience interpreting and applying Florida Building Code and related state regulations.\nExperience collaborating with architects, engineers, contractors, regulatory agencies, and executive leadership.\nExperience supporting large-scale capital construction, renovation, and infrastructure projects.\nDemonstrated ability to develop policies, improve processes, and lead strategic initiatives related to construction compliance and building safety.\nSpecial Instructions to the Applicants:\nThe anticipated salary range for this position is $104,664 - $156,996. The final salary will be determined based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, and internal equity considerations.\nPosition requires a valid Class E driver’s license. This position may involve driving to various locations on and off campus to conduct University business.\nAll applicants must be authorized to work for any U.S. employer.
