Law Graduate Fellow - Medical-Legal Partnership for Seniors

THE ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the supervision of the Managing Attorney for the Medical-Legal Partnership for Seniors (MLPS) Clinic at the University of California College of the Law, San Francisco, the Medical-Legal Partnership for Seniors Law Graduate Fellow (MLPS Law Graduate Fellow) will provide direct legal services to clients in the Medical-Legal Partnership for Seniors Clinic (MLPS).

The MLPS Law Graduate Fellow is responsible for client case management and providing legal advice and representation to older adults in advance health and financial planning, simple estate planning, public benefits (Medi-Cal, Social Security, IHSS, CalFresh, CAPI, etc.), pre-eviction housing matters and elder abuse matters.

This is a part-time, short-term (approx. 3 months) appointment.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Typical responsibilities consist of but are not limited to:
  • Independently managing client cases from intake to resolution under the supervision of the Managing Attorney
  • Interviewing and counseling clients, conducting factual and legal research, preparing legal documents, writing memos, documentation, administrative tasks, and legal research
  • Meeting with clients at their homes, in the MLPS office, or in hospital or clinical settings
  • Providing trainings to local healthcare providers, community non-profit staff, and older adult consumers in San Franciso on socio-legal needs of older adults
  • Coordinate and consult with Managing Attorney
  • Supporting the mission of the organization

REQUIREMENTS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and experience:

  • JD
  • Interest in elder law and/or health law

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Demonstrated experience with or sensitivity to the needs of older adults, persons with disabilities, veterans, non-English language speakers, or with other particularly vulnerable populations
  • Ability to relate to and communicate with a broad range of clients and colleagues
  • Values working cooperatively with others, both within the organization and in the community
  • Substantial knowledge and/or experience advance care planning
  • Knowledge of California health and income benefits strongly preferred
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to coordinate and manage variety of task simultaneously
