Editorial Internship (Temporary, Part-Time)

INTERNSHIP SUMMARY

Reporting to the Associate Editor, the intern will develop skills in museum editorial practices, research, writing, editing, and digital publishing while gaining exposure to the communications functions of a major art museum. The internship provides hands-on experience supporting editorial projects across LACMA’s digital and print communications, including the Unframedblog and Insidermagazine. The intern will also have opportunities to collaborate with colleagues in marketing, press, education and public programs, graphic design, rights and reproductions, and curatorial departments.

The internship provides exposure to the full editorial process, from research and content development through editing, publication, and post-publication review. Through mentorship and feedback from museum communications professionals, the intern will develop an understanding of museum editorial standards and practices and have opportunities to contribute published writing to LACMA’s communications platforms.

The internship is based at LACMA’s main campus, with the possibility of partial remote work. Participants may also have opportunities to attend exhibitions, public programs, and other museum events to support editorial research and content development.

This is a 16-week paid internship, approximately 16 hours per week at $18.47/hour.

Anticipated Start Date: October 16, 2026

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Learns to research, develop, and author written content for LACMA’s Unframedblog, Insidermagazine, and other editorial platforms, with opportunities to explore topics related to the collection, exhibitions, public programs, and museum activities.

  • Participates in editorial planning meetings and learns how content ideas are developed for evergreen, exhibition-related, and audience-focused communications.

  • Develops skills in editing, proofreading, and preparing content for publication while gaining familiarity with LACMA’s editorial standards and processes.

  • Learns to upload and update digital content using content management systems and other tools used to publish web content.

  • Supports proofreading of digital and print materials developed in collaboration with departments including press, marketing, membership, development, education, public programs, and exhibitions.

  • Learns how audience engagement metrics inform editorial planning and content strategies.

  • Develops professional research and interviewing skills by working with curatorial and other museum staff to gather information for digital and print content.

  • Gains exposure to the planning, organization, and archiving of editorial assets and materials.

  • Learns about image licensing and rights procedures by working with the Rights and Reproductions department to support the use of images in digital and print communications.

  • Gains insight into the daily operations of a museum communications department by observing and assisting with appropriate editorial activities.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Internship applicants must be currently enrolled in an academic program or have recently graduated within 1 year.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Interest in arts, museums, cultural institutions, communications, writing, or editorial work.
