Growing together.\nPrimary Responsibilities:\nLead multiple cross-functional software engineering teams responsible for delivering and supporting business-critical applications across the Government Programs Digital (Medicare and Retirement)\nDrive end-to-end software delivery, including solution design, development, testing, deployment, operational support, and continuous improvement\nChampion AI-enabled engineering practices and AIDLC adoption to improve developer productivity, quality, and delivery velocity\nLead modernization initiatives, including cloud transformation, platform upgrades, technical debt reduction, and application rationalization efforts\nEstablish and enforce engineering governance, architecture standards, security controls, and operational excellence practices\nPartner with business stakeholders, product owners, architects, and technology leaders to define roadmaps, priorities, and strategic technology investments\nOversee application health, availability, incident management, vulnerability remediation, compliance, and audit readiness\nManage engineering capacity, financial planning, vendor partnerships, and resource allocation to ensure successful delivery of strategic initiatives\nDevelop and mentor engineering talent through coaching, succession planning, performance management, and career development programs\nFoster a culture of innovation, accountability, collaboration, and continuous learning across the organization\nTrack and drive key performance indicators related to delivery commitments, quality, operational stability, and customer satisfaction\nCommunicate program status, risks, dependencies, and business impacts to senior leadership and executive stakeholders\nProvides leadership to and is accountable for the performance of managers and/or senior level professional staff\nImpact of work is most often at the operational or local business unit or market level\nComply with all applicable Company policies, procedures, and business directives, changes including those relating to work location, team assignments, work schedules, and flexible work arrangements\nRequired Qualifications:\nBachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or related field\n14+ years of progressive software engineering experience, including application development, delivery, and production support\n3+ years of experience leading software engineering teams, managers, or large cross-functional technical organizations\nExperience delivering enterprise-scale applications using Java, Spring Boot, Microservices, APIs, Cloud, and modern software development practices\nExperience managing application availability, incident management, vulnerability remediation, compliance, and operational excellence\nExperience leading complex technology transformation and modernization initiatives\nSolid understanding of Agile, DevOps, CI/CD, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), and software quality practices\nDemonstrated solid people leadership skills including coaching, mentoring, talent development, succession planning, and performance management\nProven ability to influence and collaborate with business leaders, architects, product teams, and executive stakeholders\nProven excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to present to senior leadership\nPreferred Qualifications:\nMaster's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, AI/ML, Business Administration, or related field\nIndustry certifications in Cloud, AI/ML, Agile, Scrum, SAFe, or Engineering Leadership\nExperience leading AI-enabled software development initiatives, Generative AI programs, AI agents, Copilot solutions, or AI-driven engineering transformations\nExperience with cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS, or GCP and large-scale cloud migration programs\nExperience managing healthcare, claims processing, payer, or insurance technology platforms\nExperience managing geographically distributed teams and vendor partnerships\nExperience driving engineering governance, portfolio management, financial planning, and strategic technology roadmaps\nKnowledge of cybersecurity practices, vulnerability remediation programs, risk management, and regulatory compliance requirements\nAI SkillsExperience using GitHub Copilot, Microsoft 365 Copilot, and other enterprise-approved AI tools\nLeverages AI for coding, testing, documentation, and analysis\nSolid adoption of AI-assisted development practices (target 90%+ weekly usage)\nDemonstrates continuous learning and adoption of emerging AI capabilities\n\nAt UnitedHealth Group, our mission is to help people live healthier lives and make the health system work better for everyone.
