Universal Quantum is a Brighton company founded in 2018 that is building trapped ion quantum computers designed to scale to millions of qubits. Its architecture connects modules with electric fields rather than lasers, which the founders argue is more practical at scale. The company won German government funding to build a demonstrator machine.

At Universal Quantum we aim to make the world a better place by engineering the future of computing. Together, we are creating truly impactful quantum computers. Our machines will be capable of solving problems until now considered impossible, with applications ranging across a broad range of industries including healthcare, materials and aerospace. We are looking to hire an Electronics Technician (m/f/d) to join our Electronics Group and help drive our innovative development work forward. Passionate about helping create technologies that can change the world? We may be the right place for you, so get in touch!

Role Profile

You will be a key member of the team that is responsible for supporting our electronics development and for maintaining the quality of our lab environments. Within your role you will have the opportunity to engage with technical challenges which suit your skills and development goals. Detail-oriented applicants who are passionate about problem solving and with interests spanning a wide range of engineering disciplines are ideal. You will also be involved in the development and day-to-day implementation of both operational processes (e.g., organization systems and 5S audits), Health and Safety practices (e.g., risk assessments, and SOPs), and other laboratory maintenance tasks (e.g. Consumables and stock ordering). This position requires a collaborative candidate with good communication skills.

What You Can Accomplish

Technical:

  • Simple PCB design (using Altium, e.g. test circuits, breakouts, adapters)
  • Assembly of low-volume PCB prototypes and precise rework of components
  • Electronics testing and data collection (e.g., organizing setups, equipment, and monitoring of tests)
  • Basic mechanical CAD (e.g., IO panel design & 3D printed parts)
  • Mechanical fabrication and assembly (e.g., 3D printing, product assembly, cable making)
  • Component sourcing based on defined specifications (e.g., connectors, cables, switches)

Laboratory:

  • Be a go-to person for engineering problem solving
  • Support the Health and Safety aspects and drive 5S principals
  • Maintenance, organisation, and asset tracking (e.g., components, tools, and test equipment)
  • Ensure stock of essential supplies (e.g., resistors, solder, 3D printer materials)
  • Engage with facilities for planning activities and risk management.

Requirements

The 3 Most Critical Attributes We’ll Use to Compare Candidates

  • Experience in working with PCBs, electronics assemblies, electronic components, soldering, rework etc.
  • Appreciation of good lab working practices, working safely, maintaining organisation in the lab
  • Basic PCB schematic and layout using CAD tools, good manufacturing process knowledge and excellent verification/debug skills using electronics test equipment.

Must-have Skills:

  • 5-10 years of experience in working with electronics components, circuit boards, wiring, soldering, tools, and test equipment
  • Experience with surface-mount assembly techniques i.e. stencil pasting, manual pick-and-place, reflow soldering etc.
  • Ability to read and interpret electronics schematics
  • Confident in using standard electronics test equipment: DMMs, Oscilloscopes, F-Gen
  • Sound knowledge of health and safety regulations, and experience in upholding H&S standards and good lab practices
  • Experience in building test setups for electronics and electro-mechanical systems
  • Experience of working with suppliers and contractors
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, a team player
  • Degree or relevant experience in engineering or electronics or a related discipline

Nice-to-have Skills:

  • Familiarity with both digital (e.g. MCUs, I2C, SPI, FPGAs) and analogue (e.g. ADCs, DACs, filter types) electronics circuits and components.
  • Experience of RF measurement techniques.
  • Familiarity with complex electronics test equipment: Spectrum Analysers, Vector Network Analysers, LCR meters.
  • Some history of using Altium and or SolidWorks, or other comparable CAD software
  • Experience with 3D part design, FDM 3D printing, and DFM
  • Familiarity with writing or understanding code and documentation (e.g. C-style or Python scripts)
  • Experience with organisational systems (e.g. for inventory management such as PartDB)

Please feel encouraged to apply even if you don't match all the requirements of our job description. We would love to receive your application even if you think you're only a partial match
